Chronicle... Republican SLANDEROUS ATTACKS UPON PUBLIC MEN, Nothing tends more to lower the dignity o¢ the American press, and detract from its use- tolnese, than the indiseriminate publication of slanders upon leading public men. Govern. ment officials, from the highest to the lowest, are subject to continued abuse and misrepre- Sentation, and no attention isfpaid to truth ifa spicy paragraph can be manufactured. To be eure there are readers who make proper aliow_ ance for the spirit which is generally the ani- mus of such assaalts, but there are too many who are willing to credit any story, however absurd, which is damaging to their opponents. We have been led into making these remarks in consequence of a newspaper attack, which has been widely circulated, upon Senator Fessenden, of Maine, one ot the most upright and censcientious of our leading public men. 1t was stated that he had quartered almost every male member of his family on the public tteasury, and the names of twosons and six brothers were given in preof. «A Maine Dem- ocrat,” im one of our morning cotem poraries, Tetutes (bis charge of nepotism, and says that “Senator Fessenden had three sons in the army, who entered it at the commencement of the rebellion, and remained in the service (with the exception ef Lieutenant Samuel Fes- senden, who was killed in the second battle of Bull Run) untti the close of the war. General James D. Fessenden enlisted in the first com- pany of Maine sharpshooters, and was elected captain by bis pg! oy and commissioned by the Governor of the State. General Francis Fessenden was appointed captain in the Tega- lar army ou bis own application. Both these gentlemen served with distinction and won their promotion without the assistance of their father.” The statements in regard to the Senator's brothers are shown to be equally utreliabie, The family has been largely represented in the National and State Legislature, and the posi- tions held by the Senator's brothers have been attained without his aid. This candid demo- cratic correspondent, from whom we quote, says “If the party to which they belong has seen fit to repose so much confidence in them it is not to their discredit. if we must have Radi- cals in office, May we have no worse.” THE“NATIONAL BANK OF THE METROPO Lis.” As a matter of general interest to our citizens ‘wetransfer to eur columns, from the New York Times of the 29th ultimo, the followtag: Notice.—The National Bank of the Metropolis, located at Washington city, in the District of Columbia, is closing up its affairs. All note. bolders and other creditors of said Association are therefore hereby notified to present the botes and other claims against the Association for payment. J.B. Horcarnsoy, Cashier. d Washington city, Nov. 30, 1366. itis perhaps hardly to be wondered at that thig announcement should have been first made in the city of New York, where the pres- ident and principal stockhelders of the bank are understood to reside. It would seem, how- ever, to be due to “all note-holders and other creditors” here, that they too should be noti_ fied of an event equally affecting their inter. ests. Our readers need not be reminded that the bank thus “closing up its affairs,” after an ex- istence of about two years, is not the good old «Bank of the Metropolis”—an institution of some sixty years standing—now so favorably known as the “National Metropolitan Bank.” FROM IDAHO. Message of Governor Cox. Cincinnati, Jan.2—The Obio Legislature in extra session convened at Columbus at sen o'cleck to-day. Gov. Cox's message is quite lengthy, and treats principally of State affairs. Tre finances of the State are represented to be in a flonishing condition. The balance in the Stare treasury on Nov. 15th was over $1,021,- 00. Total amount collected on the tax dupli- cate for the fiscal year is over $20,870,000. The State debton Nov. 15th was 812,912,000. The eommissioners of the sinking fund have paid and discharged during the past year over $1,097,000, and the payment to be made by them during the present month will reduce the total debt to a little over $11,341,000. During the coming four years, $5,814,000 of the debt and interest will become payable, but its discharge will require no additional taxa- tion. The total valuation of pr ty in the State subject to taxation in 1967 is $1,106,208,000. equal to about one per cent on the waole out- standing debt of the State. The financesof the State were never in as favorable condition as now, and the State’s credit in the market is not surpassed by any otber State or Government in the world. The benevolent institutions of the State are represented as being in good con- dition and conducted with proper economy. The Governor says thatthe record by the Ohio soldiers enlisted during the war has been compiled, and he recommends the pro- Priety of following the matic of nearly all the other States in publishing and making available to the world the only complete and uthentic evidence of the patriotic efforts of the State in the great national struggle, In 8] ing of national affai: he says of the onal Amendment: “It contains pro- visions, which. in the wisdom of the National Legislature, are necessary to secure P coped neat peace throughout the country, and tocor- rect the palpable evils remaining in those States whieh were lately in rebellion—evils which, without such correction, would en- danger the na’ional safety, and be a Tasting source of irritation and strife.
