i ' THE EVENING STAR. 4 Fearful Perfo: {From the Buffalo Express, Sept. 29 j A man named Joba Ko-s was arrest-d at Evarsduring the ear/y part of this month, charged with stealing a horse from Uaned Sates Deputy Collector Taompson, who nad se.ard the same at Black Rock ferry for non- ny ment of ies. He was brought before Bstice Albro, who on the Stn of September feliy committed bim te jail to await trial on the charge. He remained im jail without anything un- usual Dappening until yesterday afternoon, ‘when at the usual hoor of letting out the pris- oners he went down into the privy, taking th him the rope from his bunk. He them lied up a couple of rotten boards and tast- ered himself into the horrible vault. The was found atrached to the scantling buta short time afer bis disappearance, and search was commenced immediately for the prisoner. The vault is an exceedingly large one, Bas not been ci for some time, and accumulation of filth rendered the stench an- bearable. Furtber examination demoustrated tbat the man bad not onlyiescended into its depths, that be bad disappeared in the sewer, which Is only sixteen inches square, connecting the vault with the main sewer on Ellicott street. A long pele was procured by the efMficials, and an effort made to reaca him by ‘hrusting it into the aperture, but without success. One of the prisoners was induced to enter the sewer to see if be could find him, bat me was unable fo resist the influence of the Jetid atmosphere, and came out gasping tor breath. From the description of the sewer, it seems almost wevitable that the maa must bave been suffocated before reaching the main drain in jeott street, or, if he did mot, he must Dave experienced some terrible eensation in forcing his paseage throagh He is described as being five eleve: ches in height, and proportionatety sto! it would seem almost impossible for sucha person to squeeze himself along the narrow age from the vault to the main sewer; bat if be did not succeed in accomplishing his ob- ject, what must bi been his horror to find irmaee. when perhaps he 1 passage terminated some- Where above the ground. DasreRaTE COUNTER WITH A DEER.— One of the most daring encounters incident to bunting life—tbough fortunately resulting in nothing serious—that we have heard for a long me. occurred in the vicinity of Mud Ureex, one disy last week.
