Tue Opotsra 1n BaLtimone—The Sun of this morning says: There were several cases of cholera reported yesterdy to Dr. G. E. Mor- gan, commissioner of heaith. Mr. John Bacgs, 4 well-known boot and shoe munufacturer, residing on Barre street, near Fremont, died at o'clock yesterday morning, from a violent at- tack of cholera. Mr. B. had just returned from Philadelphia, complaining of sickness, and it is supposed the disease was contracted in that city. He was about 50 years of age, was for many years one ofthe visitors of the city jail, and was & much Oo og peg citizen. Mrs. Eliz- abeth Schultz, residing at No. 300 Alice Anna street, died, after a briefattack of cholera, about two o'clock on Thursday afternoon. A yeung man, name unknown, residing at No. 2 Baker street, near Pennsylyanta avenue, was at- tacked yesterday, and died in a short time. Dr. Fossett reports his death to have been caused by cholera. Hughey Hymos, a young colored man. living at No. 13€ North Daijlas street, was taken on Thursday with severe di- arrhea, which soon assumed a cholera type, trom which he died yesterday. Dr. Norris at- tended him. The deceased worked in an oys- ter house, and bad partaken freely of raw oys- ters. Dr. John F. Powell was yesterday morn- ing called to see a son of Capt. Robinson. on board of a Nespeliying in the Sean of, iy & Reeves’ oyster packing establishment. The youth bad been eating freely of raw oysters, and althongh Bis disease had every ‘mptom of cholera, he was last evening considered in afair way ofrecovery. Such being the cases reported, it is evident that there is no general prevalence of the disease m this city. Balti- more, indeed, appears freer of cholera than other of the cities. A Sirext Wonan.—The Portland Press re- cords what it calls “one of the wonders of the world” in the case of a woman who has just died in the almshouee in that city, at the age of seventy years. Disappointed in love in early life, she made &® vow never to speak another word during her life; and during the thirty- five years she has spent in the Portéand poor- bouee, she religiously kept her vow, until death sealed her lips, not uttering a single in- telligible word during all thattime. The Press says that she remained im full possession of her vocal faculties throughout the silent years, but does not explain how that fact is known. pene Par oenminatiertey A Reviciovs CorTroversy In BELGIUM.— A bitter controvery 1s going on Belgrum, caused by religious dissensions. In consequence ot the appearance of the cholera M. Piercot, Bur- gomaster of Liege, considered himself called on to =p se the procession of the assamp- tion fm that town. Thereon the clerical jour- nals expressed great indignation, and one of them declared that an open and epergetic re- sistence ought to be organized, and that no at- tention whatever should be psid to the inter- diction. The other papers replied, and angry articles are appearing on both sides.
