Tue Prisoxers.—The police are obliged to Srrange for ‘be keeping of their prisoners even after cial and commitment for court. The warden of the jail, by direction of the Court. it ic, declined to Teceive any miore prison- ets. This is not because of want of room. but because the jail is full of sickness. From the statements we have beard, the disease appears te be a violent fever, typhus, and also some cases of smal] pox, and the warden and his as- sistants find it difficult to give atiention to. the si and well prisoners they have already ip ebarge. The Superintendent of Police has re- cently committed several noted characters, and under existing circumstances. they cannot be sentto jail. Asa guardian of the community he di not feel justified in turning them loose, and has made arrangements for their safe keep- ing elsewhere. The outbreak of clisease in the ee and the violence with whicl: it is said to raging among the prisoners, is another ap- peal for the removal of that miserable concern from the beart of the city. We are also in- formed that the fever bas broken ont afresh in the workhouse, and that already this week there have been five or six deaths. These are the only prisons in the District for the safe keeping of prisoners of all descriptions. If the authorities cannot secure the vicious, the quiet and orderly must submit tote preyed yg but ae po other prisons can be © it is suggested that sending the vicious to the in- fected prisons will probably effec; for the com- munity what has been prayed for so earnestly fo five years past,a final riddance of em. The number of prisoners bas, however, been materially reduced by ee court oreering the erp yay et for trivial offences, and it is that by re- moving the sick to one of the hospital buil in Judi uare, (for the use of which ap- Plication bas already been made,) and other efforts of the officers, that the disease will be soon got under.
