EVENING STAR. A Great Swindie. the ‘wait on them, and on leaving Washi mn city them to negotiate with him atSt. Louis. then returned to this city, and put up at the Southern Hotel, awaiting “dispatches.” In a short time a foe rr came, which was @aswered by his confederate Metcalfe, who | of a week Metcalf telegraphed them as Allen’s agent or private Secretary, and stated that Al- jen had returned, and that he had authorized him to say that they could have the cotton at twenty cents. Two or three days afterward Judge John C. Walker, of Washington City, arrived here with power of attorney from Haghes, Denver & Peck, to purchase the cot- ton for them, he himsel1 to have a sixth inter- est in the profits. The Judge found Allen at the Southern Hotel, and concluded, as they nad a matter of such importance to talk about, it would be-as well for them just to take a room together for convenience sake. Allen was willing, and they accordingly took rooms to- gether at the Southern, each endeavoring toex- eel the other in genial hospitality, and that kind ofopen-hearted generosity which vents itself in small matters, such as cigars, cham- acm &e. {ter two or three days spent in telegraphing Backward and forward from Washington, Judge Walker received a dispatch advising him to advance $20,0W0 on the eotton to close the bargain and to draw on them for the amount. The Judge accordingly paid over to Allen the sum of $20,000, and they were to leave in the course of two or three days for Little Rock, the Judge to take along with him the sum of $150,000, or cashenough to ay for the cotton on its delivery into his possession. Allen and Metcalfe, baving received the money, lett | at once for Paris, Edgar county, Illinois, where they completely surprised the natives by the amount of treasure they displayed. It is al- Jeged that upon the day of their reaching Paris they took into their confidence a third party, to whom they offered the sum ot $10,000 in cash to accompany them to Little Rock with Judge Walker, with a view ot getting possession of $150,000 he was to take with him. The young man understood them as hintiag that it would be necessary to murder the Judge —who, they stated, was a notorious rebel—and he declined to accompany them. The young | man then went to the sheriff of Edgar county and informed bim of the piot. The sheriff at ence came to St. Louis, and informed Judge Walker of what he had learned. The Judge butan hour or two afier receiving the warn- img, and learning that the men he had been dealing with were swindlers, and that they had conceived the idea of murdering, came face to face to Allen at the desk of the Southern Ho- | tel. He had not, however, the courage to ar- rest Allen, but ran into the street, and hunted | for a policeman. Upon entering the hotel again, Alien and his confederate had taken the bint of danger and fled. It was atterward dis. covered that they had left the city on the same afternoon for Canada. Nothing Bas since been heard of either ef them.—<S?.
