Al the interview yesterday between the Pres_ ident and the committee bearing the resolutions ofthe meeting held in Baltimore on Monday evening lastto sustain the policy of the Ad- ministration, Lieut. Gov. Cox, of the State of Maryland, presented the resolutions in a brief and appropriate address, to which the Presi- dent replied as follows: “4 can make no speech further than say my policy is before the country. It is not the re. sult of impulse, but the result of a conviction that itis the principle upon which the Goy- ernment was founded. It is before the coun- try, and it will continue to be. I say this to give assurance that the Government wiil be administered on that policy, and I do not say itmenacingty. It is believed that the safety of the Government rests upon these principles. I am not insensible to the compliment you pay me by this visit. That man’s heart and mind must indeed be barren notto be deeply im- pressed by such assurances of the people's support. This compliment is pecuharly grat- ifying tome. 1 believe that the conutry will be restored to its normal condition of prosperi- ty and harmony. I entered the contest ex- pressing the same views I do now, and I stand now as I did then. by the Union and the Con- sutution, not haying swerved a hair's breadth. Itis said that if ‘a President be elected by a party and abandon that party, he is Tyier- ived—and much abuse and taunts haye been uttered. Those things have no effect on me. My only work is the restoration of the country —the thoreugh reconciliation and harmony of the pation. We are steadily accomplisting our work. We bave seen families who were di- vided smongst themselves, and had cousider- able dissension amongst them—but we see them all afterwards harmonized, and living in peace and friendship. So it will be with us. If we cat do this, I think it something to be proud of, and not to be taunted. it will come right in the end, notwithstanding opposiion. On this matter, extremists of both sections, while persuing different means, labored steadily to the accomplishment of the same end, the de- struction of the Union. So far as the dissolu- tion of the Union was concerned one is as bad &s the other. When the rebellion is put down, and we find a party for consolidation and con- centration, it is the same spiritas rebellion, and leads to the same end, the destruction of the Government. I desire nothi but to effect this reconciliation thoroughly. hen I can do this I can exclaim with full heart, <I have reached the summit of my ambition.’ I have no other ambition. My only object is to restore the Union to fts tull and reconciled normal condition. Then my work will bedone. 1 thank you, gentlemen, for this mark of your countenance and support.” The Baltimere Ann onference of the jurch. CURIOUS EXPERIMENT AND MICROSCOPIC BY AMINATIONS. An English paper says :—“The trichina can- not live at the temperatare of boiling water, eo that thorough cooking of suspected pork is all that is required to render it Barmiess. An il- lustration of this occurred at Hedersieben. A woman who bought some sausages became se- riously ill through eating some of them, whilet her husband for whom she fried the remainder, was uninjured. As meat, however, is usual): boiled or roasted in pieces of some considerable size, it may easily happen that the interior may not reach the required temperature. Professor Hertwig made some re, conclusive ex; ~ ments in proof of this. He placed two of trichimous pork, each about the size of one’s thumb, in cold water, and then raised it to the boiling point. One piece he boiled twen' wo minutes, the other twenty-five; and he that the firet piece still contained living trich- ne, whilst in the second piece they were all dead. The violence of the ou at Hett- stadt and Hedereleben must undoubtedly be ascribed to the penchant of the inhabitants for raw or insufiiciently cooked meat. “It has been erroneously stated by some that it is dificult to find trichine in infected meat. This is not the case: a little experience enables one to detect the position of one with the naked eye, and with a little practice in the use of the microscope, they can be focussed in a few min- utes, and it is by no means an unpleasant, it, with its slow and graceful gyrations; it livee, moreover, for several weeke, and even months, in this manner, and it at rest, merely requiresa little careful warming to set it once more col- ing upon itself. Professor Hertwig, in some interesting re- searches, showed with what astonishing rapidi- ty these parasites propagate. He examined four young porkers by making a small inci- sion, and examining the flesh removed under the microscope, it was perfectly free from trichinw. To the first he gave one Loth (about sixteen firammes) of trichinous meat: to the second, two; to the third, three; and to the fourth, four: and then watched the effects. They became ill in the sameday; diarrhea and a general stiffness of the limbs were the princi- pal symptoms; and one of them died. In all, not only the one which died, but likewise in the other three, not thousands but millions of trichiow were present. Before they were killed small excisions were made from time to time, and microscopical examination showed the presence of these parasite worms; even in eight days their flesh was,so to speak, satn- rated with them.” Late Southern ms.
