The monthly reports of teachers were read. The school in the First District having the best attendance and punctuality is Primary No. 3, taught by Miss Bates. ‘The greatest number of certificates of merit were given in Primaries No. 4 and No. 6, taught by Miss Walker and Miss Stabler. The school in the Second District having the best average attendance and punctuality during the month is Primary No. 7, tanght by Miss J. L.. Adams. The school whose pupils received the greatest number of certificates of merit is Primary No. 1, tanght by Miss Julia A. Brown. The best attendance and punctuality in the Third District was in Primary School No. 1, taught by Mrs. Roys. and the greatest number of certificates of merit were issued in Primary School No. 2, tanght by Miss Hinton. In the Fourth District the best attendance And punctuality was in Secondary School No. 6, taught by Miss Magee: and the greatest number of certificates of merit were issued in Primary School, No. 4, Miss Bailey, teacher. Bills amounting in the aggregate to $191.75 were presented, approved and ordered to be Rhees from the committee on accounts, presented the account of receipts and expendi- tures for the quarter ending December 31, 1965, from which it appears that the balance to the Credit of the treasurer September 30, 1365, was $9.07; aggregate receipts, $22,573.80; aggregate expenditures, $22,573.75, balance in the hands of the treasurer, 5 cents. Svrcroxe Or Joserun Kenngpy—The Inquest. ‘This morning, Coroner Woodward held an in- quest im view of the body ef Joseph Kennedy, who shot himself yesterday at his residence on New York avenne, between 4th and 5th streets. m the evidence it appeared that the de- sed lived very happily with bis tamily, but ‘Was subject to fits of despondency: and any little rouble would overcome him. Several times mm the last six years he bas been heard to say that he was tired of living. His eldest daughter, a young lady of sixteen years, testi- Med that yesterday he appeared to be very cheerful, and a few moments before his death, ‘was with her and her mother in the kitchen, and went up stairs. She heard the pistol, ran up Stairs with her mother, and found her fa- ther bad seated himself by the bed and shot himself. He lived about an hour, but without speaking. Dr. Prentiss probed the wound The ball entered the right temple, and passed through the bead and out of the left side, en- tering the north wall ofthe room. It was as- certained that the deceased had been greatly barrassed by creditors, and the jury returned & verdict that he came to his death by a shot from a pistol in bis own hand, while laboring under despondency. DEPARTYRE OF THE HIBERNIA ENGINE.—OUn the 22d instant the Hibernia Steam Engine will leave the city with its members, the Govern- ment discharging it from further service in the Fire Brigade. This excellent company has been very usefal in Washington during the time it has been here, and our citizens regret their departure. Anengine of the Amoskeag pattern, which bas been in service at Alexan- dria, will take the place of the Hibernia, and a portion of the men of the Hibernia company to work it, will remain with the Government ire Brigade while it is still an organization, ——_e———_ DrowyEeD.— terday some boys discovered the body of aman floating in the Anacostia, near the nari & ard bridge. The coroner was notified and held aminquest. The man was about 40 years 0: age, neatly dressed, but could not be identified by anyone. A note addressed to “Dear Murphy” found in one of his pockets, Jed to the beliet that the name of the deceased is Murphy.
