A RODY FOUND—EXAGGERATED RUMORS. There were many rumors this morning in re- gard to the remains of Preston King, which it was said had been found in the Hudson River. ‘The report at the Merchani’s News Room, taken there by aperson who resided on the New Jersey shore, aod whofwas known at the Toom, was that the body had been recoguized by Lim, and that it had fastcued to the ieet the bag of shot Mr. King is supposed to have pur- ebased. This testimony was positive, and was quickly circulated in various forms. There were other similar accounts. A per- ov at tbe Cusiom House declared he had seen the remains. Wora had also been conveyed to the Astor House, directly it was understood from the persons who secured the remains, aud a detective who bad seen Mr. King at the Astor House, at intervals, for many years, ‘Was cent to investigate the reports. He found on cue of the docks at Hoboken the body of a drowned man, which was thought to be that of the late Collecior. The detectivejexam.ned it, and though it was a large body, he easily con- vinced bimselfit could not be Mr. King’s. He made fnll inquiries. however, and reported be- fore noon that ihe remains were those of a German. ‘The theory thet this German was the person who jumped irom the Hoboken ferry-boat has b suggested by anumber of citizens; but the proofs esnceraing the appearance of the man who bought the shot ou the morning of Mon- sy, and of the man who had made the fatal plange, with other facts, are toysiroag to ad- mit of any doubi in the matter. The impression that the remains of the late collector may not be recovered gains ground. ‘The weight of the shot woa'd,Jit is thought, prevent the body from floutiug on shore, and deep tin deep water, while at the same time it would easily float with the tide. Many boats of all kinds areemployed to-day in dragging the boitom of the Hudson River, between this city and Hoboken. The number efrew-boats alone thus enguged is fitiy or sixty ¥. SLAVEBY ABOLISHED AND THE REBEL DEBT REPUDIALrED, President Johnson to-day received the fol- lowing telegram : TALLANASSEE, FLORIDA, November 18, 1605. } Ardrew Johnsen, Presdent United Siates:— The Convention bes annulled the ordinance of secession, abolished slavery, and declared that all the inbabitants of the State, without dis. tinction of color, are free, and that no person shall beincom petent to testify asa witness oa account of color ip any matter wherein a colored person is concerned. It hasrepndiated the State debt contracted in support of the rebellion, amended the constitution im other respects, and adjourned. WILLTAM Marvin, Provisional (sovernor of Florida. prcenrd es eeaene ihriibe celui THE REASON WHY. The London News (see foreign despatches) asks, apropos of the arrival of the pirate Shen- andosh in the Mersey, “bow the Shenandoah w nabled to pursue her course without the least interruption from the American Nayy !” For the simple reason that every Briiish port wos asheller for her and her fellow-pirates, and that the twenty-four hours start permitted ber by “neutral” Britons enabled her, as it did the Alabama and the others, to slip away and escape successful pursuit. Should the «next war,” or any other war, ever call into requisi- tion American'steamer privateers to the disad- vantage of British commerce, we opine that Great Britain will have a livelier time, even, in overtaking them than we have had with the fast-seiling rebel pirates. ORDERED TO TEXAS. All of the regular cavalry regiments (except the Sib, deiachments ot which areon duty in Washington, Cumberland, Md., and Nash. ville, Tenn.,) have been ordered to report to Gen. Sheridan, and will be assigned to duty under Gen. Merritt, at San Antonia, Texas, The ordering of these trocps to Texas his oec.sioned considerable speculation, and {» looked upon by some as haying an important bearing relative to affairs in Mexico. It is probable, however, thet the cavalry are as- sigaed to Texas merely because that arm of che sarvice can be employed to better adyantaze there than iniantry. The 2d and 3d regiments ofregular cavalry are now in Maryland, the 4th in Tennessee, and the Ist and 6th in New Orleans. ° ——_—_—_ GENERAL HOWARD. He speaks encouragingly of off irs in the South, and his visit has been of'gret va"ue to both whites end blacks of the Southern States, as well as to the legislaiive and execu- tive departments o° the Government. TO BE TRIED. It is understood in well informed military circles, that the Secretary of War has ordered amilitary court to convene for the trial of Winders, Duncan, and Gee, now confined in the Old Capitol prison, upon the charge of cruel treatment towards Union prisoners at Andersonville. ———_—_——_______ RELEASES ORDERED.
