EVENING STAR. Kissing im the Cars. A. correspondent of one of our exchanges telis the following story 1 was spending the 5 night at Freeport, Illi- mois. Afier breakfast I came into the sitting- Toom, where I met a pleasant, chattering, good hhumored traveler, who, like myself, was await- | ma. We con- | upon kissing just about the time the train was approaching. “Come,” said he, taking up his carpet-bag, “Since we are on sosweeta into let us bave a practical application. 1 will make a propo- sition to you. I'l) ‘agree to kiss the most beauti- 0) lady in the cars from Galena, you being the ede. if you will kiss the next prettiest, ” a “on mea little, and I could bardly tell whether he ws in earnest or jn fun; but as he would be as deep in itas I pos- Bibly could be, I agreed, pro: he yoo ao the first kissing, though my heart fail a cwhat as 1 saw bis biack eyes sparkle wi daring. “ id be, “I will try 1t first. You take tis Loker and go im from the front end, where you can sce the faces of the ladies, and stand by the one yon think the handsomest, and J’lt come in from behind and kiss her.” 1 had hardly st-pped inside the car, when I saw at the first glance one of the loveliest wo- men my eye ever fell on—a beantiful blonde, with auburn hair, and a bright sunny face, full ef love and sweetness. and as radiant as the morning. Any further search was totally un- necessary. I immediately took my stand in the aisle of the car by her side. She was looking out of the window earnestly, as if expecting some one. The back door of the ee opened, and in stepped my hotel friend. inted my finger slyly at ber, never pave hat he dare carry out his pledge, and you may imagine my amaze- ment when he stepped up quickly behind and kissed ber with a relish that made my mouth water. Iexpected, ot course, a shriek of ter- yor, and then a row generally, and aknock down; but judge of 4 astonishment when 1 enw her return the kisses with compound interest. Quick as a flash he turned to me and id pap sir, it is your turn,” pomting to a hideously ugly, wrinkled old woman who sat the seat behind. maton stexcuse me!” I exclaimed, “I’m gold this time, I give up. Do tell me who you have been kissing?” And we all burst into a general peal of laughter, as he said: “This is my wife. I have been waiting here for ber.” He told the story to his wife, who looked ten- fold sweeter as she heard it. SMALL-Pox In ALApaMA—lIt is useless to disguise the fact that the small-pox is gradually but surely spreading itself thronghout this city —not only amongst the colored population; bnt also amongst the whites. We have heard from undoubted authority that convalescent patients who bave been afflicted with it, have appear in our most crowded thoroughfares. Numbers of the prisoners in the jail have been attacked with it, and sent to the hospitals in the suburbs to be properly treated. e un- derstand that there is not at this time any good vaccine matier in the city, but physicians, we imagine, will soon obviate this difficulty.— Montgomery ( Ala.) Mail, Getober 27. BF The Great Northern Railway in England is going to introduce a system for consuming ‘the smoke of the locomotives, and at the same time manufacture gas from the same for light- ‘intg the train. = FiBE AT BARNUM’S MUSEUM. A CARD FROM P. T. BARBNUM. INSUBANCE POLICIES, BOOKS AND PAPERS ALL SAVED. New Yor, July 14, 1855. Messrs. Herrin & Co.
