EVENING STAR. The Story of a Family of Thieves. BOW IMMENSE ROBBERIES WERE COMMITTED. A een nae of the Lig — ania, | writing from Hollidaysburg, says: { One of the most important trials took place in our Criminal Court daring the last week | that the Pegple of thie section have ever wit- nessed. was larceny; the indicted pat in S. Buckholder, Ludish, his wife, Julia, Lavinia and Mary Hawi bie daughters, and Henry, Thomas, Perry “and | Norval Hawk, sons and son-in-law. The trial lasted a oe and Pecgerentat ea eae tion of ail t! fendants except Perry Burk- holder and his mother. = “The charge was for stealin, jarge amount of goods shipped in the cars oF tne the Peanayive- Bia Railroad Company. The head of this de- leetable family was a well-to-do farmer and horse speculator, living four yee east of Al- toona, im this county. His hier, Mary Hawk. and her husband, Norval awk, in Oc- tober, November and December, 1864, and Jan- Bary, 1665, resided in Altoora. Margaret Burkholder, not then married to John Bishop Cozzen Ware, was s frequent visitor at her Sister's, and here was planned this gigantic system of robbe: x Hawk, as an employee, bad got possession of a freight car key, which was broken, but by filling answered the purpose. During tne last three months of 1864 immense quantities of goods were missing from the cars. and noone was suspected. The goods were carried to Hawk's, there divided, er the share of Lavi- nia and Julia carried to their mother and two brothers, Henry and Thomas, down into the country, to their home, on horseback, in the carriage and in sleds. On December 3ist, Wareand Margaret were married. The cars ot the railroad company furnished then with an outfit for housekeeping. Tne stock of Mr. Krause, from Pottstown, Montgomery county, was pilfered, and p iin quantities of towels, carpets, slips, silk dresses and shawls taken by thie woman from the cars, his goods having been shipped for Indiana, Pa. John J. Burk- holder was opposed to this match. “Things went on swimmingly until, in March of this year, traces of missing goods Were then observed. Search warrants were obtained, and the result was the discovery of abouta thousand dollars’ worth of at Hawk's and Ware's. This being but a mite of the amount missing, led to the suspicion that some was concealed at Burkholder’s. Ware having been arrested, he told them where it might be hid, and as the search continued, great packages of goods were found hidden in the Baymow, in the cellar, under the potatoes, in and avout the outhouse, and everywhere that goods could or would be hid. Lamps and oil cans of the railroad company were found in the Possession of Burkholder, and stolen goods were found in every part of the honse—in the chests and trunks of the girls and even upon the persons of the boys. It was impossible to convict all the defendants without the testi- mony of Ware, as nine-tenths of the property it ‘Was not possible to identify. «John J. Burkholder owns a large farm, and Was in no necessity of resorting to this mode of making & living. The trial was doubly im- pressive, inasmuch as itis the practice in this judicial district, under the act of Assembly, to arraign all persons charged with the commis- sion ofateleny. It was a strange and painful family reunion—eight persons, from the gray- beaded grandfather to the youngest son of four- teen years of age.” Baltimore Markets.
