The committee appointed at the last meeting to draft a memorial petitioning the General Government for the use of the lands at Sandy Hook for a quarantine, represent the necessity of a rigid quarantine in several portions of the country, to guard against the introduction of cholera, and that the authorities of New York are without a proper place to establish a quar- antine to meet the anticipated emergency. In this dilemma, they earnestly request the General Government to grant for temporary quarantine grounds so much of the land as may be necessary, now owned by the Govern- ment, at Sandy Hook, in the lower bay. ‘The memorial was adopted, and Drs. Sayre Arderson, and the Mayor of Cleveland, were appointed a committee to proceed to Washing- ton and Jay the matter before the Government. We stated a day or two ago that the United States Consul at Manchester, England, wri- ting to the State Department, October 18th, in regard to the alarming spread of the cattle plague in Great Britain, suggested that the re portation of foreign stoek into America be for the present prohibited. Itis due to Commissioner eer vee ral Department, to say nae September report he earnestly urged the duty of our Government to guard against theintroduction of the disease into the United States by either positively prohibiting the importation of cattle during the existence of the disease, or by applying very stringent quarantine regulations to their importation. ‘The lesson of duty taught us by the hog cholera was referred to. That disease originated on ‘Laughery creek, at Aurora, Dearborn county, Indiana, whether through the agency of the jarge distillery there or not is a mooted ques- tion. But a “military cordon,” with those rigid precautions adopted by the German na- tions against the rinderpest, might have saved the hundreds of thousands of hogs destroyed by it, and what is as bad, the fixing on the country this fatal disease as one of the normal diseases ofthe country.
