THE EVENING STAR. ~~ REBEL NEWS. Extracts from late ichmond Papers— Death mM. Daniel, ef the Exam~- amer—The Rebel L at Bentenville 4.000—Dispatehes from Gen. Lee. | From the Richmond Sentinel, Marc’ 31.} “HEAR QUARTERS, March 1, I~ jeneral J ©. Breckinridge. Secretary of War: “General Gordon reports that the enemy, at 11 p.m. yes- terday. advanced against @ part of Dis line, de- fended by Brigadier General Lewis, but was repulsed i “Thefire ef artillery and mortars continned for several houra with considerable activity. «No damage to our lines senatied “ 2B.” An official dispatch from Gene Lee last night states that there was skirmishing near Iinwiddie Court House yesterday, without decisive result. Battle ef Bentonville. N.C. {From the Richmond Sentinel, March 31.) he fight on Saturday, the 19th, is said to have been one of the Nottest battles of tae war. An officer, who bas shared all the fortunes of the Army of Tennessee, informs the editor of the Standard that the roll of musketry for two or three hours on Sanday, the ivth, was eqnal to any he had ever heard, with the exceptionof the battle of (Fettysburg. Our troops charged with steadiness and impetuosity, driving the enemy from his two lines of breastworks and cecupying them. The battle of Sunday was a brilliant victory for the Confederate arms. On Monday and Tuesday the fight was renewed to some extent; but General Johnston displayed as much skill in withdrawing his troops as he bad shown determination and vigor in the conflict of Sunday. The Standard of the 25th says: “Itis not proper that we snould publish the reports as to the position of the respective forces, but we may say that General Johnston ts ina safe position where he can deal blow after blow on ike epemy. «Our loss in these battles is estimated at some 2 560 killed, wounded, and missing, and that of the enemy at 5,000.” Personal. From the Richmond Sentinel, March 31.} nied, Op Thursday, the 30th instant, at 10 a. m.Hon. John M. Daniel, late Minister Resi- dent United States at Turin, and for many yeare editor of the Richmend Examiner, in-the 40th year of his age. The funeral services will be held at Rey. Dr. Hoge’s Onurch; on this (Friday) afternoon, at 4 o’clock. by Speaker Thomas S. Bocock, of the House of Congress, left the city on Wednesday for his home Senator Wigfall has left for his native State, Texas, and expects to be absent until the assembling of Congress next fall, and per- haps longer. From East Tennessee. The Petersburg Express says that at an early bour Wednesday morning a heavy force of the enemy, consisting of cavalry, intantry, and artuilery, supposed to be headed by “Cavairy Sheridan,” made a detour around our lines and advanced toward the Boydton Plank Road, and between 7 and © o'clock struck this thoroughfare some six miles beyond Dinwid- cle Court House. Toward i! o'clock we understand that this force was in the vicinity of the Court House, cur forces skirmishing heavily with their ad- vance. Last evening it was reported that the enemy hyd reached the Court House and was demonstrating toward Burgess’ Mill. It is be lieved thatthe desttnation of this force is the Southside Railroad, which Grant wishes to destroy and thereby cut off Gen. Lee’s commu- rieation and diminish his supplies. Whiie demonstrating on the plank road it is thonght the main body of cavalry strack out through the couniry in the direction of tne railroad; this, however, is not particularly known. The following telegram appears exclusively in the Whig: From Alabams—Raid uear Mentgomery— e@llision of Steamers. MonTGOMERY, March 23.—A Yankee raiding column struch the Alabama and Florida Rail- road, 20 miles below here yesterday morning, and captured @ train. The passenger train which left here Thareday evening collided With the wrecs and was also captured. The conductor, Winn, and some of the passengers ‘were wounded. Vhe enemy left, stating that their destination was Greenville. Gen. Watts calied on the citizens to prepare to defend the city, and the commandant of the post ordered the organ- ization of all persons belonging to the army to repel the movement on the railroad. ‘he steamers Folly and Dixie collided on the river fourmiles above the city last night. ‘The Dixie was sunk. The passengers were saved; 500 bales of cotton on board were lost. [SECOND DISPaTCH } MONT&OMERY, March 25.—The enemy on the railsoad below moved down the road after the capture @nd destruction of the trains below Greenville. Their force is reported at 2,500 strong, principolly in infantry. The Movements of Sheridan—Iron-Clads at City Point. The Richmond Whig of Thursday has the following: ‘*Frem the Soute Side. «The Petersburg Express of yesterday (Wednesday) remarks that quiet has once more been restored on our lines. Scarcely a gun was fired yesterday from the Appomattox to Hatcher’s Run. The old condition of affairs is resumed. “Sheridan’s cavairy have arrived within Grent’s lines, and the impression is that he ‘will soon be heard from. Large bodies of cay- alry were seen yesterday morning towards eurright. The factis well known that a large body of cavalry moved down the plank road two or three days since, and it is highly prob- able that Sheridan, inflated by his recent suc- cesses, MAY Attempt something similar on this side of the lines. We predict for him an in- giorious defeat. «Reliable intelligence from City Point rep- resents the presence of fifteen monitors and forty tron-clad vessels in the James river, besides an innumerable fleet of smaller and jess formidable boats “Since the attempt of the Confederates to pass the Yankee obstructions, the enemy has doubled his vigilance and Jargely increased hie naval force. Admiral Porter is in com- mand of the James river fleet, and his flagship occupies & prominent position among the ves- sels. City Point is now a populous place, and Acontinuous wharf extends a long distance cown the James to @ point half a mila up the Appomattox river.” The War News.
