Analarm Was immediately signalled from box 42 on Riggs’ banking house, and the bells were struck by the fire alarm telegraph in an incredibly short time, some of the engines arriving at the the scene before any crowd had collected. Owing to the scarcity of water, the flames could not be extinguished in the frame build- ings, but the efforts of the hook and ladder company, assisted by & small stream from Vermont avenue, prevented further serious destruction. The brick house on the corner of 15% street, occupied by Maj. Gen. Augur, was badly damaged, and will require some time for its repair. To-day Gen. Augur occupies for headquartersjthe brick dwellings on 14th street, used by the Chief (Quartermaster, Uol. It appeared in evidence that the boy formerly lived at the house and ‘was mischievous, frequently throwing dirt mpon the dishes to annoy the servant girls. Saturday he went to the servants’ window and threw a potato at one of the girls, who called the attention of Bergmier to him. Bergmier Tan out and seized a heavy wooden bar, used to secpre a gate, and struck the boy across the back with it. The boy fell a¢if dead, and re- mained unconscious for nearlyan hour. Sun- day morning the boy was not considered dan- gerously injured, and Justice Thompson ad- Mitted Bergmier to bail for court. ———— A Segziove Fizt PREvEN1ED.—Yesterday Morning, afew minutes after 11 o’clocm, the house occupied by G. The police and citizens were successful in getting to the roof with a hand hose attached to a bydrant and soon extinguished the flames. Superintendent Richards and Sergeant Skip- on, with a number of the Tnird Ward and Jetective Police, worked manfully, and pre- ented any persons from entering the building who were notknown tothem. The fire was Accidentally occasioned by sparks from a flue. ‘The aamage was confined tothe roof and the plastering of the upper story. ge Navy YARD.—The steamer Mohican left the Yard on Saturday afternoon for Bostom, but in going through the channel she grounded on the flats, opposite Buzzard Point, where she still lies.
