The offices of the Ledger, the Inqnirer, the Prees, the Evening Bulletin, and the Telegraph, the Sunday Dispatch and Transcript are illu- minated. The fire companies were ruuning their car- Triages through the streets. Most of their houses and many private resiaences were il- lnminated, and and 4 general rejoicing was at ite height, NEW YORK. Simeon Dra- er, P. M. Wetmore, M. Odell, Major General utterfield, Wm. M. Evarts, Rufus W. An- drews and others. The greatest enthusiasm prevailed. During the proceedings, the yast assemblige sang “Old Hundred.” A grand celebration was in preparation foran eafly day in Union sqnare. The joyful excitement continued in this city ali the afternoon andevening. Very little bus- iness was transacted, many of the merchants closing their shops. The meeting in Wall street was continued ull past fouro’clock. The Petroleam Board, the drug merchants, and the Tobacco Ex change, and all of which meet in the Mer- chants’ Exchange, in Pine street, adjourned with enthusiastic cheers. The Produce Exchange was deserted, and the Stock Board had bn: few present. The Gold room was almost entirely empty. The greatest enthusiasm is manifested by all the citizens. The passenger train which left here Thursday evening colli- ded with the wreck, and was also captured. The enemy left, stating that their destination was Greenville. Governor Watts called on the citizens to prepare to defend the city, and the. gommandant of the post ordered the orgar- ization of all persons belonging to the army to repel the movement on the railroad. The steamers Folly and Dixie collided on the river four miles above the city, Jast night. The Dixie was sunk. The passengers were saved. Five hundred bales of cotton on board were Jost. Their force is believed to be twen- ty-five hundred stron SHERIDAN’S MOVEMENTS. HEADQUARTERS ARMY POTOMAC, April 1— Midnight.—A courier from Sheridan has just arrived with the most cheering news. The combined forces of cavalry and War- ren's infantry advanced against the enemy this afternoon, driving them several miles and capturing about four thousand prisoners and a nu r of pieces of artillery. They retreated to ‘e Points, where they were ficnked by a part of the 5th corps, which had moved down the White Oak Road. It was here the large number of prisoners were taken. The rebels then retreated south along the White Oak road, and were vigorously parsued by General Sheridan, while McKenzie’s cay- alry, from the Army of the James. advanced west on the ford road, toWard the Southside Toad, and, when the messenger left, was only about three miles from it, and would undoubt- edly reach it berore morning. Thus the last great line of railroad the rebels have to supply their capital and Lee’s army is about to be severed, and it is firmly believed they will im- mediately leave their present position at Pe- tersburg and Richmond. Sharp cannonading is now going on near the centre of the line held by the left of the 6th corps. W. D. McGrecor. CONNECTICUT ELECTION Buckingham Re-elected Govern for Members of Congress. J. - HEADQUARTERS ARMY OF THE Poromac; - Satarday, April 1, 1905— out of the «wilderness of scrub oaks, dwarf swamps, ravines seed knolis, over which our lines stfeteh, some intel! idea cf Our operations yesterday be ap- parent. This State of Virginia is worth fight. ing for as embodying & politecal principle; bat as so Many acres of nd, itis not one fingle hnman life. 'e thought at the Wilder- ness that we had Sane oT aLoes , was horrible and miserable and the aspect of nature, but then we Nad not econ — the country southwest of Peterebn’ = gied mass of ravines and hilloc! = thee streamlets runming in all possible directa of little by-roads shooting off to every poigt the compasé, seéming to come from nowhere, andto he leading nowhere, intersecting each other at every conceivable angle of dense for- ests of the meanest and most detestable kind of serub oak and pine; picture this; and throw in bere and there & worn-out open field, with an old dilapidated farm house in the center, and you have a faint picture of the difliculues of the country in which we are operating. Out of this knotted mass the “special” must pluck the salient points for the information of the public; must ride miles on miles even to see the frout of one Corps, and visit its various headquarters, and tried, at night must write out what he has seen, what heard, what opines from both ; is it any wonder that under cir cumstances like these his accounts are some- times vague, sometimes unsatisfactory. Give bim_a fight like Fort Steadman, where he knows the ground, and where the ground is Open, he does well enongh. Pat him in the kind of country we are in now and he does as well as he can. Premising that the day has been compara- tively quiet on the right of our offensive line, composed of the Second and Twenty-fourth Corps, it is the intention first to give the pub- jic some idea of The Relative Position of the Twe Ar .. A battle, fierce, sanguinary and decisive, May come off any day on this very ground, and the people will take a natural interest ina section that has already become historic, aud may become sacred in the nation’s calend First, itmust be premised that our old line in front of Petersburg, from the Appomattox to the leftof the Weldon road, remains intact and held precisely as they were before our present movement was initiated, running, un- til yesterday, to Hatcher's Run, bu? changed from Fort Sampson to the left, by the advance of the 2ith corps, consequent upon the capture of the enemy’s intrenched picker live. From Petersburg to Hatche’s Run, by the Vaughn road is seyen and a half miles, ana by the Boydton road seven miles. The 2th corps frontis a prolongation of our line beyond the Hoydton roed, with the cavyairy beyond them again, the line facing generally northeast, the flank being towards the South Side road, from the bend of the road to the south west. Thus much by way of necessary preface. It remains toskeich events to the present mo- ment, and beginning on the right with the 24th corps, two divisions of which, those of Turner and Foster, with one division of the25th corps, (Birney's.) all under the command of Major Genero! Gibbons, areoperating here. Birney's division has been held as a reserve thus far. Foster is on the rig&t of the 2ith, then Turner, forming connection with Hayes, holding the Tight of the 2deorps. Along General Gibbons’ front the day has been quiet. This morning. just before daybreax, the reb- els essayed an attack upon Turner's pickets, coming in the old yelling style, butthey quickly came to grief. Turner’s line did not budge an inch, except to gather in sixty of the adven- turous rebels as prisoners and tokilland maint some few more. The prisoners sent tethe rear, Turner’s line quietly composed itself again, and during the remainder of the day the rebeis behaving themselves well, and we not yet being ready to disturb the apparent peacefal- ness of the neighborhood, it has been quiet until about 9.30 p.m., when & brisk cannon- ading begun, and yet continues, (10.20 p.m") What it means it is impossible to-night to eay. It seems by the sound to be general, on the Gin corps frontas well asthe 2ith,andan ooca- sional distant rumble from the right indicates that the 9th corps is also adding to the up- roar. Passing still to the left and the 2d corps, the day has been as pracetet as on the right. Oc- casional picket skirmishing has been going on, but nothing moreserious in the way of fighting. The men of the corps have been busy, how- ever, building roads to the rear, cutting timber to the front for the artillery to get range, and other won re ely to action. While men- tioning r it 18 but justice to notice the Jabors of the chiefs of the apncets of the sev- eral divisions; Captain G. W. Cook, 6ist New York, of the ist, Captain H. Y. Russell, of the 26, and Captain Charles Bowers, Sth New Jer- sey, of the 3d, whose s, although herculean and Sppareany. imp ble, have been snccess~ fully accompliched. Energy will accomplich ‘wonders, and the energy of these officers has elready made passable the impassable country around Dabney’s Mills and beyond, substantia) cerduroy roads now cutting the country in every direction, and rendering accese to the various parts of the line easy and sure. Just beyond night the Second Division line Was advanced somewhat, being pushed close upto the rebel fortat Hatcher’s Run. Gen. Smythe covering it with his musketry so en- lirely that the rebels cannot use its guns, Were it not for the very extensive slashing in front of this line, both before the Second and Twenty-fourth Corps, we could easily c it by assanit, but this slashing 1s so intricate men can hardly crawl through itsingly, and it would be impossible to maintain a line of bat- fe through it under anything likea respectable re. General Mott still holds his position on the left of General Hayes, and presses as close upon the rebel line as his confrere, but his line, like that ot Hayes, has been qniet. General Miles still stretches across the Boyd- ton Road in the position occupied yesterday. His fignt yesterday was a brilliant one, and answered fully the purpose for whicn it was begun, being a diverson in favor of the Fifth Corps. His onslaught upon their line near Burgess Millinduced the rebels to hurry men to the threatened point, and thusgaye Warren and Sheridan less to contend against. General Humphries was heard of to-day, only en his skirmish line. He is determined to know exactly the position of the enemy on the front of his corps, and so he goes where he can cee it. Proceeding still to the lett with the story of to-day, L take upthe Sth corps. The opera- tions of Gen. Warren yesterday have already reached pou, This morning early the corps moved off on the Boydton Road. Griffininad- vance, then Ayres next, Crawford north about two miles, and taking a road running nearly west, came in contact with the enemy near what the rebels call Five Points, which, so near asit can be located with the assistance of imperfect maps, is from three to four miles northwest of Dinwiddie Court House, In the afterncon General Warren got into line with Griffin on the right, Ayres on the centre and Crawford on the lef:. It should be remembered here that this movement eut Sheridan and Warren off from all connection with the remainder of our army, and their fighting this afternoon has been an entirely in- dependent affair. The distance at which the corps has been engaged, the difficnitief of com- munication have been euch that it is impossi- ble to more than outline the affair, ifeven that canbe done. Artillery was bat little used, but the musketry was terriffic along the whole line. The battle began at five in the afternoon, and by dark, when it ceased, the firing had re- ceded far beyond the point of beginning, show- ing that our forces had driven the enemy from the field. The extent of our success, the rela- tive lesses of the contending forces, and other details necessary toa full knowledge of the history enacted to-day, it is impossible to send. The country in that section of Virginia corres- onds to what surrounds ushere, except that it islevel. There are the same swamps, the same norrible pine forests, the same treach-_ erous soil. Is this whole State of Virginia nothing buta wilderness of worn-out farms, wamps and pineries ? What of the enemy during all these move- ments of ours! Longstreet’s corps, composed of the divisions of Pickett, Constant and Ker- shaw, have been transferred from the north of the James to our extreme left, and, together with Fitzhugh Lee’s cayalry, seven thousand strong, has been fighting Sheridan and Warren to-day. Hill’s corpsand Bushrod Jobnson’s disvision of Anderson’s ee) are opposite the 2nd and 21th corps, and Gordon’s corps oppo- site the 6th and 9th. What they have op- posite Weitzel, north of the James, it is Rard to say,as their whole army is already counted for, except one division of Anderson’ corps.
