SHEBIDAN CAPTURES FORTY REBEL oee Crests pee HE CAPTURES 1,300 MEN!! > HE OAPTURES EIGHT OANNON!! eae HE CAPTUBES OVER 100 WAGONS! piel viper ters HE SMASHES UP EARLY GENERALLY!! EE Information has deen received here from Winchester, fully confirming the glorious news brought into Grant's lines by deserters” of a great victory achieved by Sheridan over Early in the valley. The battle took place near Waynesboro, and resulted in the capture by Sheridan of 40 rebel Officers, 1,300 men, 3 cannons and over 100 wagons. Sheridan when heard from via Winchester, was still pursuing his victorious career, and doubtless has,ere this, smashed up Early's army completely, and probably captured the redoubtable Early himself, as reported by de- serters frem Richmond Waynesborongh is a small village in Augus- ta county, on the South river, on the Central Railroad, at the West base of the Blue Ridge, one hundred and eight miles from Richmond. The village contains two or three churches, and at the outbreak of the rebellion had a population of about six hundred. It is about fitteen miles from Staunton and twenty-five from Charlottesville. So there is no doubt that Sheridan has reached Ohariuttes. ville, and perhaps Lynchburg, ere this, if those points were in his line of march. Sheridan probably reached Staunton on Wednesday, and, turning to the left, followed the line of the Virginia Central Railroad throngh Rockfish Gap, (in the Biue Ridge,) and encountered Early on the day following, either coming up from or falling back toward Richmond. Charlottesville is situated at the junction of the Alexandria and Lynchburg and Virginia (Central) and Covington Roads, and has never before been visited by Federal troops. Owing to the fact that all the supplies gathered in the Shenandoah Valley for Lee’s army have had to p&ss through the place, it has been considered of vital importance to the enemy. Its capture insures, now for the first time, the destruction of the net work of rail- roads northwest of the rebel capital. Gen.Grant’s bulletin implied that Lynch. burg is Sheridan's objective point, and desert- ers, he informs us, state that four brigades of troops have been despatched from Richmond, With the hope of reaching the placein advance of Sheridan. The distance from Richmond to Lynchburg by rail is 12! miles. That from Charlotteville to Lynchburg is only 60 mileg, or one day and a half rapid ride for cavalry. TELEGRAPHIO NEWS. FROM NORTH CAROLINA. Great Battle te Come Off at Raleigh— Rebel Reports—Forty thousand Federals Cencentrating at Newbern to Strike Lee's Army in Conjunction with Sherman, Newnern, N. C., March 1. — Intelligence from a North Carolina paper indicates that both sections are concentrating their forces on her borders for the final struggle. A Raleigh paper says the people of that city will hear the guns of the last and great battle of the American rebellion, and that the tra- ditionary grounds of the old North State all bethe common grave-yard of States rights and State lines, without which no attempt at seces- sion could have been made. The existence of State lines will always be a sufficient pretext to prompt the locat mterest of one section to revolt against the Government if the ether sec- tion refuseto sacrifice their local interest. The Raleigh Progress says the Federals are concentrating a force of 40,000 men at Newbern, which will soon be ready to strike General Lee’s army in conjunction with Sherman’s force. From Europe. Mutual explanations haye taken place be- tween the Governments of Great Britain and the United States which have resulted in a re- scinding of the passport order of the 17th of December, so far as relates to the province of Canada, and in an understanding that under present ciroumstances, and notwithstanding the notise lately given in that respect, the na- yal force.of the United States, upon the upper Lakes, shall be the same, which was stipulated by the Treaty of April, 1817. FIGHT WITH GUERRILLAS. On Friday last, information having reached the camp of the sth Illinois cavalry, at Fair. fax, that a body of guerrillas, under command of White, the notorious guerrilla chief, were in the vicinity of Gainesville, preparing to commit depredations, the 8th were immediate- ly sent in pursuit. Coming up with the guer- rillas near Gainesville, a spirited fight ensued, which resulted in the rebels being put to flight with a loss of seven killed and eight taken prisoners, notwithstanding the fact that our troops were greatly outnumbered. White, himself, made 4 narrow escape from being captured. FROM THE UPPEBPOTOMAO. During the absence of Gen. Sheridan on a cayalry raid, Gen. Hancock, who 1s is in tem- porary command of the Middie Military De- partment, with headquarters at Winchester, has suspended all communication between the Maryland and Virginiashores on the Upper Potomac. The banks of the river are strongly picketed to prevent any one in Maryland com- munioating with the guerrillas on the Virginia side of the Potomac. FROM CITY POINT. The mail boat Daniel Webster arrived here this morning from City Point, bringing up the mails, passengers, and a large number of rebel deserters. The ‘warm sun of the past few days has dried up the mud considerably. The roads are im- proving rapidly, and active operations on the part of the Army of the Potomac can shortly be looked for. The siek and wounded in the corps hospitals have been removed to City.Point, and the most serious cases will be speedily shipped North. MORE REBEL DESERTERS. The steamer Daniel Webster, which arrived here this morning from City Point, brought up one hundred and twenty deserters, the majority of whom are from North Carolina regiments. (uite a large number of deserters are still at City Point, awaiting transportation North. REBEL OFFICERS DESERTING. Within the past two months, over fifty rebel officers have deserted Lee’s army and come within our lines, including Lieutenant Colo- nels, Majors, Captains, and Lieutenants. 7 It is believed in high quarters that not- withstanding the loss of the “omnibus bill” at the close of the last Congress, a special session Will not be absolutely necessary. e PERSONAL.—Goy.
