Late News from Charlesten — Families to the City—A Regiment of eo be Raised There—The f Columbia—Farther Partic. ulars concerning It—Details of the Grea Fire—Cheerful Spirit ef Sherman's Men —Ezstimate of the Strength of His Army. New York, March S —The steamer Savan- nah, from Hilton Head on the 5th, Das arrived, and brings important despatches from General Gilmore to the War Department. The Charleston Courier, of the 2d, says ao officer of Sherman’s army was in Charleston, taking mitiative steps toward raising a regi- ment of white soldiers. A number of the familles who had moved be- yond the city limits, had returned with their hougebold goods The Savapnah Republican also contsins an account of Sherman’s occepation of Columbia, derived from a citizen of that city. It appears}that the rebel troops left on the 17th ultimo in the direction of Charlotte. Goy- ernor Magrath lefton the i-th. Beauregard lett on the same day for Ohariotte. Mayor Goodwinsurrendered the city at Se- luda bridge. three miles out. The public stores were thrown open, and everybody helped themeelves. No stores were burnt. Sherman’s army entered Columbia in the afternoon, and soon afterward they com- menced destroying the public property. The depots and arsenals were blown up, and the buildings in the suburbs containing public stores were fired. Late in the afternoon a pile of cotton in the street near the Congaree Honse took fire from eparke, and the flames epread. A strong wind drove them furiously down both sides of the street. Nothing of any account was saved. The distance burned on Main sireet was aboutamileandahalf. Dr. Reynolds’ house was the only one leit standing between the section known as Cotton Town and the State Housé, The fire also extended two blocks east of Main street, destroying everything The en- tire business portion of the town isin rnins. Sherman thought he would not visit the country west of Broad river, and aivieed the Mayor to send the citizens there. The Federals seemed much incensed against Governor Magrath, and would ase him harshly if they get him. Few, if any, private residences were entered No outrages are Known to Baye been com. mitted on the ladies. The enemy were under strict discipline dure ing their march through the city. General Sherman had bis headquarters in the city, at the house of Mr. Dancan. It wes estimated that hisintantry and artillery nuom- bered 70,04 men. No cavalry was with him. Both hotels, the Guardian and Carolinian newspaper offices, Uatholiec seminary, all the depots and buildings atthe Charlotte Junction, Evans & Cogswell’s priating ertablishment were burned. All the cars and locomotives which the rebels didnot succeed in remoying were do- stroyed. Only three churches were leit standing—the Catholic, Episcopalian, and Presbyterian. The female college was uninjured, and is now occupied by houseless women and chil- ren. The old State house was blown up. The new Statehouse was not touched, it containing a statue of Washington. Wade Hampton’s was sayed by Federal of- ficers. Gereral Preston’s house was also saved and given to the ocenpants of the Catho- lic Seminary, whose property was accidently destroyed. The railroads about Columbia were all torn All the bridges leading to the place were de- stroyed. All foundries and machine shops were de- stroyed. ‘The country around the place is stripped of eatables and transportation. All the horses and carriages in the city were taken. Many negroes left with Sherman's army. None were taken by force. A large number are returning to their mas- ters. The troops were in the best condition. They were clothed &nd well shod, and marched as if they had juet started on the expedition in- strad of being out for weeks. Some of Sherman’s officers said his destina tion was Rajeigh and Salisbury. The (senera himself appeared in good spirits, °ud confident of success.
