THE EVENING STAR. A Wiid Native Steck for Pear Trees. The report ofthe Secretary of the Maine Board of Agriguiture, for 1°63. gives an ac- count of the experiments of Mr. Stones, of Hampden, Maine, wich the common Shad-busk as a stock for pears. Thescrubis | Amelamchier Canadenses,. grows all over the country, and is known by the popular names of Shad. bush, Juneberry, Service tree, | and Snogar pear. It presents a great variety in the size cf its fowers and the character of its leaves, and is one of the most conspicuous sh:ubs in M Mr. S transplants his trees from the woods, heads them back severely, and | gratts on the new growth produced. He claims that they bearearly and constantly, ard | that they are perfectly hardy. He has an or- chard of two hundred and fifty trees trea‘e: in this way, incinding the rollowing varieties: Madeline, Tysor, Baffam, Pratt, Bartlett, Flemish, Beauty Seckle, Beurre Diel, Urbanisth, and Winter Nelis. A western nurseryman states that he has budded on this stock, and that the trees | promised well, but that in moving bis nursery they were iost sight of. The subjectis an in- teresting one, and it any have had experience with this stock of pears, they should commu- nicate it. ewn Nents-foot Oil, Acorrespondent of the Germantown Tele- graph telis what they do with beeves’ legs in bis jamily “Tbe hoofs are chopped off and the other jortions are cracked and boiled thoroughly. rom thé@surface of this boiled mass, abont one pint of pure neats-foot oil is skimmed, whichis unsurpassed by any other oleaginous matter for barnees, shoes &c. After the oil is taken off, the water is strained to separate from it apy fatty particles that may remain, and then itif boiled again, until vpon trying, it is fannd it will settle intoastiff jelly. Itis then poured. into flat-bottomed dishes, and when cold cut into suitable sized pieces. It hardens ina few dsys, and you will then have a very fine arti- cle of glue, free from impurities of every kind, sufficient for family use for & twelve-month. «+ By taking a portion of this glutinous sub- stance before it hecemes too thick, and brush- ing it over pieces of silk you will have jast as Much court plaster as you desire, inodorons, te- nacicus, and entirely free from those poizonons qualities which se (as much of the article sold by apothecaries does) inflamation, when applied to ecratches, cuts, and sores.” CoTTor CLrorH.—Cotton cloth made within the past two or three years is much inferior.in quality to that manufactured before the war, and consequently there is a great demand tor “old cotton.” One of the trick3 of the trade is to take low priced cotton, wetting it to take ont the sizing and drag it about the store, so as to Onondaga, Louise Bonne | | Jefferson | } | DE | White’s TISTRY. Tus Jennincs Estare.—Most of our readers have undoubtedly heard, at some time or other, that a large property in England, estimated at several million ponnds sterling, known as the Jennings estate, has been claimed by the American heirs, decendants of the brother and sister of the English Jennings, the former of which settled in Virginia and the latter in New Hampshire. The case has been in the English Chancery Court for wary years, and the American heirs have spent considerable sums of money _in prosecuting their claims to the estate, until at last, as we are mformed by one ofthe heirs, they have obtamed a jadgmert in their favor The estate will bea yery handsome plum to divide and the heirs will make a respectable figure on the list of income ALL GEODS SPONGED, Where you can find all the latest styles of FRENCH, ENGLISH AND AMERICAN WALKING COATS, Latest styles PEG TOP PANTS, DOUBLE BREASTED VESTS ASD BUSINESS SUITS, i] PLAIN AND FANCY CAS3IMERE.
