THE EVENING STAR. LATE NEWS FROM THE SOUTH. 6 1 Dufie Safe but a Prisoner—Dis. jenera e Safe be — ise patches from General Lee—Thursday’s Fight—Movements of Heed, &c. Richmond papers of the 3ist ult. have been received in New York, and the following ex- tracts published : Safety of Gen. Dufie. [From Richmond Examiner, Oct. 31.} General A.N. Dufle, commanding First Division Cavalry Department West Virginia, Sberidan’s army, who was “gobbled” recently by Col. Mosby, arrived in Richmond yester- rt and was committed to the Libby. Gen. is @ Frenchman. Cavalry Fight im the Valley—Lee's Offiejal Report. [From Richmond Sentinel, Oct. 31.] lowing dispatch was received on Sat- trday: HweaDQuartTers ARMY OF NORTHERN VIR- emma, Oct. 29, 1861.—Hon. James A. Seddon, Secretary of War :—Gen. Early reports that the enemy attacked Gen. Lomax’s forces at Mil- ford, on the 25th instant, with one brigade and two pieces or artillery, and were repulsed. The next day they attacked with two brigades and six pieces of artillery, and were again driven ae Gen. Lomax reports our loss very slight. Gol. caby reports that since the advance of the enemy up the Manassas Gap railroad, he has killed, wounded Ce Se ond his oun and o1 5 ie atid R. E. Leg, General. Another Repert of Gen. Lee. {From the Richmond Sentinel, Oct. 31.) The following official dispatch has been re- ceived: HEADQUARTERS ARMY OF NORTHERN ViR- @rNra, Oet 29, 1641.—Hon. James A. Seddon, Sec- retary of War: Gen. Hampton followed the | enemy on his withdrawal trom Rowanty creck, driving his rear guard across and pursuingthe | eavalry behind the lines of their infantry. Sev- eral hundred prisoners were captured, and the | enemy burned some of their caissons and am- | bulances. Cur lines are re-established. R. E. Lee, General. | ~~ The Battle of Thursday. [From the Richmond Dispatch, Oct.31.] Tn the battle of Thursday last our infantry Joss in killed and wounded will not exceed one hundred and fifty. In prisoners we lost between three and four hundred. In the cavalry our loss was not very severe, as Gen. Hampton's main attack was made upon the Federal rear. General Hampton, however, | Jost one son killed and another severely | wounded Immediately after the cessation of hostilities on Thursday night, the enemy commenced to withdraw his forces in the direction of his for- tifications on the Vanghan and Squirrel Level roads, and by 2 o'clock on Friday morning had entirely disappeared from the plank road, with the exception of a small force left there to keep up an appearance of his presence in our front. Assoon as this was discovered, a brigade of our troops was ordered to advance and feel the enemy’s position, and, meeting with such slight Yesistance, they pushed forward only to ascer- tain that the enemy had gone. Some two han- Ba and fifty additional prisoners were taken ere. The enemy has fallen back to his original position, and we have re-established our for- mer lines. About dark on Thursday night, while the fighting was progressing on our right, asmall ferce of the enemy made a bold dash on our works on the lett, and succeeded in captur- ing 4 portion of them. They also gained pos- sess.on of one piece of artillery, and took prisoners Lieutenant Colonel Harrison and some twenty or thirty men of the 46th Virginia regiment. Hood Believed to be in Tennessee. From the Richmond Examiner, Oct: 31.] he war has been transferred from Georgia to Alabama. The Yankees themselves corfess this. They say Sherman, on the 27th, was at Gaylesville, chasing Hood, who was in fall Tetrent to Gadeden. We may easily detect the absurdity of this dispatch, when we look on the map and see that Gaylesville ts in the northern part of Cherokee county, on the Chatooga, an affluent of the (@osa, and that Gadsden is in the south- ‘western part of the same county, just where the ralffofd from Jacksonville to Gunter’s Landing, on the Tennessee river, crosses the Coosa. A few days ago the Southern papers stated that Beauregard was at Jacksonville Wit a considerable body of reinforcements for Hood. The two forces doubtless effected a junction four or five days ago, and as Gunter’s nding is only some thirty miles from Jack- sonyille it is more than probable that Hood and Beauregard are now in Tennessee. We doubt whether Sherman’s whole army, | or any large part of it, is at Gaylesyille. Itis | much more likely that the main body is moving down the Tennessee river in transports as rap- idly as they can be steamed, and that only a corps of observation. consisting principally of cavalry, is kept in hood’s rear. | | Mr. Belmont’s Bets. {From the New York Times.] In the Washington correspondence of the Herald, a few days since, it was stated that Mr. Belmont was ready and anxious to bet | on the result of the election, and that his confidence on the subject excited considerable surprise. in response to this notice we published on Monday the following note, saying that itcame from & perfectly responsible quarter: To the Editor of the New York Times: | I notice the Washington correspondent of the Herald says, in its last Sunday’s issue, that Mr. Belmontis ready to bet any amount on | McClellan's election. T have only to say that within a short time $2,000 to $1,000 was offered him that Lincoln would be elected. This he declined, and said be required three to one, thus not showing much confidence in the success of his friend and nominee. If Mr. Belmont has changed his views, the bet of two to one is still open for him to accept. | UNION. In reply to this we have received the fol- lowing To the Editor of the New York Times:—Sir: A | correspondent in your paper of to-day seems anxious to have a bet on the coming Presi- dentia! election. I offer the tollowing: I will bet the sum of ten thousand dollars, ($10,(4,) the money to be | deposited in the New York Trust Company, that if Mr. Lincoln should be elected, we will | be in a state of war during the term of his ad- Ministration, or will be toreed into a disgrace- ful peace, with separation; and the same | amount, to be similarly deposited, that if Gen. McClellan is elected, the Union will be restored Within his term of oilice. Yours, very respectfully, AvGuUST BELMONT. It seems from this that Mr. Belmont is not at | all anxious to bet on the result of the election, even | when he can have odds of two to one in his fa- vor. As to the bet which he is willing to take, we submit it to public consideration. The main point established by his letter, is, that he has no faith whatever in McClellan's election.
