James H Thompson, 2 member ot Cutshaw’s battalion of ertillery, Charlottesville battery, was brought in from Gainesville a day or two since, as a deserter, and this morning bad the oath administered to him by Capt. Winship, as did also Benjamin Ray and Henry Warner, refugees, who state that they were recently conscripted at Falmouth, but escaped from the conscripting officer, and made their way into our lines. Each one of the parties was fur- nished with a pass to go North. Marriage Licenses.—During the past month, Mr. Jefferson Tacey, the Clerk of the Court, has issued 35 marriage licenses. EFFECTIVENESS OF THE BLOCRADE AT Witmincton, N ©.—We understand that the ler Battery at Castine, Maines BELrast, Mr., Nov. 2.—A despatch to the Mayor of this city, trom Custine, gives the particniars of the attack upon the battery at that town, on Monday, at midnight. A small party of men approached from the rear and were challenged and immediately fired upon the sentinel, who returned the fire. Sergeant Rambell was fired upon as he came ont of his querters. Four bullets lodged within him its parsteon was mustered promptly, and pursued the raiders about half a mile, firing upon them, and they replying, when they took to their boats and escaped. The object, it is supposed, was to capture the United States cutter lying in the harbor. The city has been put into a state of defence. By orders from Governor » the home guard is in readiness for duty. ‘The city government has increased its armed police. The Pennsylvania Election, blockading fleet about Wilmiugton, N.C, has been largely increased of late, and will prob- ably give considerable trouble to the new blockade runners now fitting out in England, if they attempt to reach port. The Captain of the English blockade runner Bat, which are rived at this porta few days since, says that he attempted toenter Wilmington three differ- ent times.
