The Quarterly Conference of the station it seems, some weeks since, appoint- ed Rev. W.U. C.ark toexamine the condition of the school. and he reported to the Conference | that it did not appear to be conducted on sound Methodistical principles, that many of the books inthe library were not of the proper character, and that the school had discarded the “Sunday School Advocate” a paper pub- lished by the Book Concern. New York. That body considered the reportand declared tha’ the school was auxiliary to the M. E. S. S. Union, and furtiermore they endorsed the Ad- yocate and requested the school tosubscribe to it Last Sunday week a meeting of the officers nd teachers was held, when Mr. James N. Davis read a lengthy paper, which set forth that the schcol had been misrepresented to the luarterly Conference, and also protested against the Adrocate on the ground that its editor (Dr. Wise) drew invidious distinctions between children living in slave and free States; and aiso that he had misquoted John ‘Wesiey on the siavery question. This paper, read by Mr. Davis. referred especially to Rey. Mr. Cook, the author of the report, and spoke of him in not the mildest terms, and was signed by Messes. Harkness and Davis. A warm debate sprung up on this paper, in which Rey. Mr. Ferris, Messrs. Worthington, Langley and others took part, and the debate got so warm and personal thatit was feared that a collision would take place; bat before coming te a yote the meeting adjourned to Friday night last, when there was # large at- tendance. Bir. Ferris opened the debate, and defended the course cf Mr. Cook. He contended that slavery was an eyil, and the curse of God was up nit The paper (presented by Mr. Davis) he said, did not contain a fair statement of the action of the (juarterly Conference Mersrs. Davis, Ferris, and Rey. Mr. Thrush foliowed, the latter yindicating himself. Mr. Harkness next obtained the floor, under- taking to vindicate his action, and also to de- fend the school. He referred to the Sunday S-hool Advocate, stating that the Editor (Dr. Wise) had drawn invidious distinctions ba- tween the children from different States; and he (Mr. H.) read a paragraph from the Advo- caie to sustain his statement. He also referred to Dr. Wise quoting from Mr. Wesley a phrase bitt« rly denunciatory of American slavery; the Spiaker denying that Wesley had used such words, at least in reference to slavery in this country. Theaction of the General Conference ef met with his views when they discarded tre agitation of the slavery question; and he yro ceded to eulogise the Baltimore Uon ference for standing out against agitation. He spoke atccn-iderable length of the Sunday school, contending that it was the best arm of the church, and spoke of its oganization 21 years Since in a carpenter’s shop. From three men in that school the church originated. In con- clusion, he hoped that the views of the mem- bers migbt be harmonized, and peace again YFeign in their borders. On Monday night the teachers met a third time to consider the sudject, and after Mr. Da- vis bad spoken, Mr. Cook got the floor, and proceeded to answer the protest. He reviewed the paper presented at length, and for two hours or more spoke of the standing of the church on slavery, reading from different Methodist authors and the proceedings of the ‘various conferences to show what the bishops and others thought of the peculiar institution. He also spoke at length of the books used in the school, stating that about one half of those in the library were published by the Book Con- cern, and the otmer—many of them being ‘re- ligious novels’—by other publishing houses. He compared the singing book used in the school—the « Golden Shower"—with those is- sued by the Book Concern, and designated the former as not beinga good Methodist book. He also referred to Mr. Harkness’ past course on the slavery question, reading a petition ask- ing tbe abolishment of slavery, which was signed by him. Mr. Harkness said he wished it understood that he held those views still; that he did not cor plain of Dr. Wise’s anti-slavery sentiments, but that he (Dr. W ) had interpolated a quota. tion from Mr. Wesley. Mr. Cook proceeded at length to defend his course, and concinded at about 11 o'clock, when the meeting adjourned to meet another evening. Booth, the steward of tie ship, and Mr. A. Rodier, of the «ss White House” restaurant A number of speeches were made, the principal of which was that delivered by Mr. Morgan. This gen- tleman stated that eleven months ago the first ship of the line left New York for this port. Since tbat time four vessels hada been placed upon the line, and the Fairbanks was the fifth. Virginia, Maryland, New York and Vermont had entered into the enterprise of the estab- lichment of the line, and thus various sections of the country had joined in the scheme of uniting Washington with New York. in con- cluding bis remarks, he trusted that the line might be generously patrenized, and that a lage and flourishicg trade might soon exist between these two points. DOWLING, Aust, DR. E. BUNFORD LIGHTHILL, Of 94 St. Marke Place, New York, author of a “Popular Treatise on Deafness,” “Letters on Catarrh,” &c., &c., is now in WASHINGTUN and will be at. the . Essitt House for one week, from Monday, February 29th, until Saturday evening, March 5th, when he can be consulted on 3 Deainess, Catarrh, and all the various diseases of the Ear, Throat, Air Passages. Dr. L. is induced to make this visit on ac- count of numerous applications for treatment from parties residing in Washington who are unable to come to New York for the indispen- sable personal examination. The practice in New York does not suffer any interruption by this visit, as his brother and his assistants are there in constant attendance. The following testimonials, from well-known parties, are published for the benefit of those who are not acquainted with the doctor’s rep- utation: Letter from Rev. Dr. John Nott, Professor in Union College, Schenectady. Since I first publicly acknowledged the great benefit which I received from the skillful treat- ment of Dr. Lighthill, in regard to my hearing, letters of inquiry have incessantly poured upon me from all parts of the country from parties desiring to learn the particulars of my case, and I am indeed surprised at the number of in- dividuals who are affected similar to the man- ner in which I have been, and therefore feel it More and more a sacred duty which I owe to those sufferers, to direct them to a proper and Teliable source to obtain the benefit they so much covet, and which so many afflicted ones have hitherto sought in vain, justas I had done previous to applying to Dr. Lighthill. I had had from infancy one very deaf ear which always discharged more or less offensive matter, and was the source of the greatest an- noyance, and discomfort tome. Last year the other ear also became diseased, and both ears discharged a yellow matter very profuse and highly offensive. My hearing became very much impaired and the discharge produced the greatest debility of body and depression of spirits. I applied to my family physician and other practitioners without deriving any bene- fit, and almost despaired of being restored to health, when frovidentially, I applied to Doctor Lighthill. Under his treatment my ears began to improve at once and con- tinned to do so, until, in a comparative short time, both ears were healed, the dis- charge removed, and my hearing restored. At first I feared the cure would not be per- manent, or that the stoppage of a discharge of so long standing might prove detrimental to my general health, a fear which I find a grea many entertain in regard tothe removal of dis- charge from the ears. My experience, how- ever, has proved conclusively that my appre- hensions were entirely groundless in both re- spects, for both ears are as well, and my hear- ing as good at present, as the day I left eff treatment, and the stoppage of the discharge, instead of proving detrimental to my health, has given me the highest elasticity and vigor of body, and a flow of spirits not experienced for a long time previous. I wish the above statement might serve asa general answer to those interested, but should one or the other desire to apply to me person- ally, or by letter, I will cheerfully satisfy all reasonable demands upon my time. Lavail myself of this opportunity of again publicly expressing my deeply felt gratitude to Dr. Lighthill, whom I esteem asa gentleman and a man of science, in whom the highest con- fidence may be placed. Joun Nort. From James Cruikshank, LL. D., Editor N.Y. Teacher, Albany, N. Y. This may certify that, having been afflicted during the year 1856 with severe and almost total deafness, and having tried the ordinary medical and surgical aid, under, the care of those esteemed as eminent practitioners, I was induced at last to put myself under the care of Dr. E. B. Lighthill. His treatment was brief and successful. I was completely restored, and the cure is apparently permanent. Ihave all confidence in Dr. L.’s skill and integrity in the diseases he makes specialities. JAMES CRUIKSHANK, Albany, Oct. 1, 1862. fe 15-e03 LOST AND FOUND. OST—Between 9th snd I4th streets.
