New XYorRK, March 1._The Tribune’s Wash- ington correspondent of yesterday intimates that active operations are in progress in the Army of the Potomac. and that stirring news may be expecied to-morrow. Up to 10 o’elock Monday morning no battle had occurred be- tween the opposing infantry forces. There ‘w&s some skirmishing on our right on Sunday but nothing of any account. It is evident that Lee does not intend to leave his entrenched po- sition to fight, unless compelled by General Meade to do so. The Southwest Cavalry Expe mS. Cargo, March 1—Gen. H. L. Smith’s com- mand, the Jute cavalry expedition, arrived to- day. The expedition was 7,0U0 strong. Its cbject was to clear the country of straggimg rebel forces, and, if possible, make adiversion Bf favor of Sherman, and join him if practica- ble. MEMPBIS, Feb. 27.—A diary of an officer at- tached to Gen. Grierson’s column of General Sroith’s cavalry expedition furnishes but little ofimportance beyond what has been previously reported. Our loss in the attack on the enemy at West Point was 40 killed and wounded. We droye the rebels out, and destroyed a number } of cars, pot, and several of the railroad, and a large amount of corn and cotton. In the attack by the Forrest cavalry on our rear at Okalona, the 3d Tennessee cavalry broke at the first fire, rnnning six of our smail guns into a ditch and breaking their carriages. The guns were spiked and abandoned in this fight. Our lcss was about 100—mostly prison- ers. Our total loss during the expedition was abent 150. This column burned about 3,000 bales of Con- federate cotton and over a million bushels of corn, and captured over 100 prisoners, over 1,000 mules, and a multitude of negroes. , — CONGRESSIONAL. in THE SENATE yesterday— An amendment to the House bill for asup- plementary loan for the Government was adopted, which requires the principal upon iy bonds to be paid in coin. Sherman Defeats Polk’s Army—Arriyal of Sherman at Se}ma—Mobile Entirely Cut off—General Johustou’s Army Diavided— The Enemy Onigeneraled. {Correspondence of the New York Tribune} WASHINGTON, Feb. 27.—General Sherman is reported at the War Department as having arrived at Selma, in Alabama. This is in accordance with hisinstructions. He teftVicks- burg with twenty days’ rations, in light march- ing order, and intended to march twenty miles a day, and make a iodgment on the upper Ala- bama river. L. Was iett to the optica of General Sherman whether the depot should be estab- lished at Selma or Montgomery. He chose the former position, on the northeast bank of the river. 1t was agreed thatGeneral Loganshould move from Huntsville, and form a junction with Sherman on the Alabama. Sherman moved promptly at the appointed time, and, outgeneraling Polk, threw his forces between Mobile and Poik’s aay and, falling on the forces of the mitred Genéral, scattered his army and moved directly forw#d to Selma. The War he gerbera has trustworthy infor- mation that Logan’s cavairy has made a junc- tion with Sherman’s forces at Seima. Gen. Johnston, being alarmed for the safety of Mobile, sent one division of his army to that city. As Sherman’s orders are tg destroy the Mobile, Montgomery and Atlanta Railroad, it is potent that Johnston will also be cut off from Mobile, and must, if pressed, fall backward toward the Atlantic coast or to Lee’s army in Virginias The army of Gen. Sherman is of sufficient strength to warrant success in case of attack by the combined forces south of his present position, and, reinforced by Logan’s corps, he y sately attack even Johnston’s army. The movement of Thomas to Dalton is add- ing sirength to Sherman’s position, and threat- ens the rebel position at Atianta, The exped:- tion inio Florida is intenaed to attract the eneuyin that direction while Sherman and Thomas move into the heart of Alabama and ‘There is the utmost confidence here that this brilliant moyement, atiended with such cignal success, insures the early termina- tion of ihe war. ee LOCAL NEWS. posit de helm THs Mernopisr Cav rcHxes Of Tais Orry — It may not be Wiulnterestiag, as the Baltimora, Couference of che Methodist Ohurch is now in to give the following stawments of | the churches of Unat denomisation in ity and Georgetown. ‘ t y Chapel, of which Rev.
