Custur’s late raid, the first news of which we gaye in ad- yance of any other paper yesterday: CULPEPER Cov HovsE, March 2.—Gen. Custar, with fifteen 1} ked men, in light marching -erder, peper Court House abouttwo o’civck on Sunday atiernoon. | The bth and 3d corps marched from their win- ter quarters earlier im the day. On one side, the horses | were quietly standing: on the other, six pieces of srtullery ed, with all the appur- tenances ni yed, and in close proximi- ty to the cais The Sth reguiar regimentof General Merritt's old brigade led the van. Captain Ash, with one squadron, dashed cmong the comfortable-looking buts with reck- less precipitancy, and scattered the ocenpanis in all directions. He orcered the men to de- Stroy all they could, and they obeyed his in- structions to the very letter. Neither axes nor rat tail files could be found in his command. It was impossible to spike the guns or chop the gun carriages to pieces; so they contented them- selves with blowing up the caissons and de- stroying the camp. In the meantime, the enemy were rallying With the rapidity and zeal of the Gael ai the cal! of their chief. Several pieces of artillery were belching forth their destructive notes at the audacious invaders, and the main body of Custar’s command coming up, the enemy were Griven a short distance, to give us a foothold on the crest of the same hill with themselves. Between our troops and the town the enemy were gathering in great force. Everything warned us to get away as speedily as possible, Jest it might be our lot to getsurrounded. They had telegraphed from Charlottesville to Orange Court House that uninvited visitors were there, and aid was needed to expel them from the neighborhood. The answer to these dispatches came towards evening in the shape of five car- loads of infantry. There was nothing left us now but speedy retreat. Horses were wheeled about, and towards sunset the Ravenna was recrossed and the bridge burned. All the mills that could be found in the neighborhood were destroyed. In returning, the advance was given to Col. Stedman, who commanded the brigade of 500 men chosen from Gregg’s division. The night was very dark, and the rain that continued to fall was mingled with sleet. Custar, who fol- lewed with the thousand men who composed the remnant of bis command, got lost in the thick gloom. For some time they endeavored to blunder through a deep and muddy ravine, into which they had strayed; but when they thought of the two pieces of artillery, all hope of getting through with them was given up. Stedman, with his 500 men, continued -on their course, which, luckily for them, was correct, and about 4 o'clock Tuesday morning they reached our infantry pickets, outside of Madison Court House. Custar, finding it im- possible to proceed farther, bivowacked that night in the woods. While he baited his horses and refreshed his men, General Stuart, with 2,000 cavalrymen, of Wickham’s and Fitzhugh Lee’s brigades, was marching towards his rear. Next morning, about 9 o'clock, Custar marched on toward the rigntroad. Having reached it, and marched upon ita short distance, he dis- covered that Stuart, with his ragged but inde- fatigable followers, had succeeded in getting in bis rear, As they neared Stannardville, which is about fifteen miles from the picturesque lit- Ue yillage of Madison. the rebel cavalry were seen'’drawn in line across the road. Reported Cavalry Movements—Cannonade Heard Towards Orange Court House—’ Battle at Stannardsville—Kilpatrick Re - ported Within Twenty-five Miles of Richmond. New York, March 2.—The Tribane’s special Weshington correspondent states that columns of cavalry, under Kilpatrick and Custir, are operating on the flanks of General Lee’s army. The latter force is said to had an engazemeat yesterday morning at Stannardsville, while we hear of Kilpatrick at Spottsylyania Court House; and, rather inconsistently, witaia twenty miles of Richmond on another road. Wasnrncron, March 1, 1861 —jSpecial Dis- patch to the New York Tribune.j—« Beta” re- Ee from the headquarters of the Army of the ‘otomac to this bureau, under date of Mareh i: It would seem that Gen. Sedgwick was sant to the extreme left of the enemy to engage his attention :nd divert his vigilance from the Rapidan fords. Kilpatrick, seizing advaatage of this, crosses the river and proceeds to make a rapid detour to the soutwest of the enemy's main positions, around Orange Court House and Gordonsville, while Qustar swings rapidly around the extreme right of Sedgwick, via Madison Court House and Stannardsvilie. Our latest information from Kilpatrick was up to8 o’clock yesterday morning, when he ‘Was reported to be at Spotsylvania, and on the trot. Of Custar, we haye positive knowledge that his long fines of cavalry dashed rapidly through Madison Court House before daylight yester- day morning. 5 Tt is reasonably conjectured by a Tribune special who left the Court House at noon, that Custar had engaged the enemy at one o'clock; for a heavy cannorading was heard at that hour in the direction of Orange Court House, and it continued up to dark. « Beta” indulges in the speculation that Kil- patrick’s movement has for its object the dis. semination of the President's Amnesty Procla- mation.
