Met#nir> | snie rooms, Peunsy!vanisa aye- i o Dand 10th strocts, Li as A Reply- Wasninaton, February 4, 1561. Editor Evening Star - The commun! eaticn of Joseph F. Brown, «Seeretary in charge Washington Gas Light Company,” in your issue of 3d inst., is certainly agsingular document A Single reading alone sufficed to convince me, that it was more a2 attempt to injure the firm of J..W. Thompson & Co.as mechanics, than to defend his position in connection with the Gas Light Company; or, in other words, it was more an emanation ot malice thau an effort to prove a faithful dis- | charge of duty on his part towards hisemp|>y- ers. I must copfess that 1 was somewhat perplexed to understand the motive for such | an attack, when a friend came to my aid with the suggestion, that Mr. Brown, ‘Secretary in | charge Washington Gas Light Co..” Alderman, | | Police Commissioner, wood dealer, &¢., &c., | &c, bad recently become the proprietor of the | lumbing establishment lately conducted by Wm ‘T. Dove, and now underthe name of | Joseph Reynolds & Co., and that he evidently expected, by slandering the reputation of his most formidable competitors, to turn the tide | In my humble efforts (as a city legis!ator) to | prevent an ir crease in the price of gas, the dis- pleasure of Mr. Browa bas evideatly beea ia - curred. This is certainly to be regretted, as it is not my Gisposition to makeenemies. Bat the interests of my fellow-citizens are moreim- portant than the good will of Mr. Brown. And | if his interests are antagonistic to those of this | community, it is his misfortune—not my fault. The statements made by me in the City Coun- | cils which Mr. Brown pronounces “unquali tiedly false,” viz: that our “gas mains would bankrupt any company, being in a leiky con- | cilion, and that they are losing by leakage of mains from 25 to 33 per cent of their ga3,” is true, Dotwithstanding the Pee, deniab of the reracious “Secretary in charge.” To convince apy one Cf this fact, iet him saunter along the streets of this metropolis, and he will sniff it in ateach res;iration. Let him Jook at the many beantifnl shade trees that droop and die from the poisonous fumes of gas. Let him taste the water from our drinking wells, and be con- vinced. Yea,—let him guard well his nose as he passes the sewer openings in our streets. In short, ofall the villainous smells that infest Washington, the predominating odor is that of gas. : Notwithstanding tacts so palpable, Mr. Brown wishes us to bear this evil quietly, and pay foritas weil. O, ye—whose gas billscause | curses loud and deep, how will it be if our «Secretary in charge” succeeds in obtaining the increase of 33 cents per thousand feet, for which he is so earnestly striving? Doubtless | he argues that you have patiently borne, in the ' tace of Comptroller Brodhead’s decision, the Government tax which the Company itseif should pay; and that you will as quietly sub- lait to this reasonable addition of ten per cent. | to your bills. Let him beware lest the ‘last | feather break the camel's back.” Seriously speaking, the leakage of gas in this city 18 enormous, and the people are paying for | It can and sheuld be remedied, though it is nir to expect that the “Secretary in | in the multitude of his private pro- give the subject the attention it de- mancs; consequently, not only consumers suf- fer, butalso the stockholders,—gas goes up— whiledividendsgodown. Let Mr. Brown give the same attention to gas pipe laying that he does to politice! pipe laying, and all may yet go well. Mr. Brown states that I am inflnenced “by the most unrelenting hatred towards this com- ny.” As L detest all monopoli-s. large or | a}! which oppress the people, aad particn- lur.y those which furnish poor gasatexorbitant rates, Lem willing togive Lim credit for having, by a sheer inadvertence. astonished the public hy telling the truta. The statement relative to gas mains laid by J W. Thompson & Co., who-e contract was for a single year, (while the gis company has been iu existence fourteen years.) and who put in 260 services Out of & total of about 2,500 on the books of the company, is a contemptible sabter- tuge, even for Mr. Brown. It needs no answer. The reputation of that firm cannot be affected by the ertions of a jeaious rival, especially when that rival is Mr. Jos. F. Brown, 1 append, however, the statement of Lloyd W. Emmart, (then in our employ, and who, as our foreman, superiniended the work,) which I respectfully submit, makes more indisputable than ever, Mr. Brown's well-earned and ac- krowledged sonbriquet, “ Munchausen the Second.” Respectfully, ALEX R.SuEPaerRd, Councilman, Third Ward. WAasHINGTON, Feb. 4, 1851. | AVR. Shepherd, Esq.: Desr Sir— cing & communication in the Ster ot the 3d inst., reflecting upon the manner in which mains and services were laid by J. W. Thomrsen & Co, and having personally superintended all werk done by you for the Gas Company, I feel somewhat implicated in this charge, and wish tosay Mr. Brown’sState- ment is falee in every particular; that he com- plimentd me in writing in the Mighest terms upon the manrer in which the work was done. Geo. W. Riggs, Esq., and Col. W.G. Freeman, the directors, also praised its execution; and here let me say that out of 2=2 orders received tor work, 32 of them were for repairs of gas leakages in work previously done by the Gas Company. These I nave in my possession. and can be exhibited if you need them. I have been in Washington since your contract, and do not believe they haye ever repaired one of your jobs. I think you can safely offer Mr. Brown #100 for every leak of gas he can show in your work. Yours respectfully, &c., Lioyp EnMarr.
