[ASSOCIATED PRESS DISPATCHES.] FROM NORTH CAROLINA. Despatch toGeneral Butler—A Union Re- verse at Backelor’s Creek—The Rebels 15,000 Strong. FortrEss Monros, Feb. 3.—The following official dispatch has been received: Newsgrs, N.C. Feb. 1, 8 p.m.—To Major General Butier: Early this morning our ont- posts at Bachelor’s Ureek were attacked by the enemy, represented in force about 15 000 strong, consisting of Hoke’s brigade and Pickett's en- tire division. It being impracticable to make adequate de- fence, our force fell back in good order, de- stroying their camps, but leaving but few stores, with a loss of $0 to 100men and the aban- donment of one section of light artillery, which may be recovered. Our forces are so re-nr- rapged that we are confident of a successful resistance. Almost simultaneously with this attack, the enemy advanced on the south side of the Trent, with what force it is difficult to estimate, and were handsomely repulsed. Comouatesucn still costienes with More- ead, but the enemy are nenr the railroad, with the evident intention of cutting it. The commander at Besufort is aware of the situation, and will use every effort to prevent the interruption of the road: J.W. Pater, Brigadier General. FROM CAIRO. The excitement produced by the detection of the culprit has been all the greater because he happens to be one of the first amongst the doctors of Paris. Added to this, the man is a real count—the Count de Coartez de la Pommerage, one of the finest names in the Province of Orleanuais. As may be supposed, when we add to this im- mense advantage of noblesse, that of youth, good looks, and plausible address, the Gount’s principal practice has always been amongst the jadies, and itis by one of the fairest and most interesting of his clients that thissystem, which has governed hissuccess in acquiring afortune, has been discovered. The victim nad called bim in some time ago fcr a slight irritation of the throat, to which she had been subject for some years. The doctor beheld at once the un- protected position of a widow, with small for- tune, living an isolated life, with bat few in- timate friends, and scarcely any relatives. The prey was marked out and pursued with perseverance. In ashort time the widow had iweured her life fer the fabulous sum of tive bun¢red thourand francs, the doctor undertik- ing the management of the whole affair. No socner is the first instalment paid in than the widow dies—this excites the curiosity of the insurance office; the ma-:ter is lcoked into, no other doctor is found to have attended her save one, who, being sent for by the servant. in whose mind « not suspicion,” as she says, “but uneasiness,” had arisen, went one night to fetch in the doctor who lived in the next house. This gentleman, on finding the symp- toms to be nothing more serious than a little nausea, accompanied by a burning pam in the chest, believed it nothing more than mdiges- uon, and, afier having ordered a mild emetic, withdrew, promising to ¢epeat bis visit the bext day. ut before he leIthis bed in the morning be was required by a note from the lady containing the 1ee tor thesingle visit, with the request thar, «+ As his Emetic had done her © ro govd—quite the reyerse—she must beg of him never to cet his foot in her house again.” The mesceage was so abrupt and iil-mannered that it became a nutural subject of conversa- ticm among the doctors, who in every country are recognized as gossips of the first water. One of theee, to whom the note was shown, happened to recognize the hand-writing as that of the Count, and, when the news of the ceath of the patient was made public, he in- stantly informed the insurance office of the circumstance. It was thus that suspicion first fell upon the doctor, and the detection enzuad. The affair has made a tremendous noise iu Par- is, and ro frigbtened the women, o!d and young, titled and untitled, that the profession is at a discount. Theophile Gautier will probabi: arrenge a nice little comedy of horrors out it,so that the + sentation” will last through the winter, or at least until something equally appalling shall occur. FIGHTING, SWEARING, AND PRAYING IvDI- vipual.—Hindricks the re:urned-from-Rich- mond correspondent of the N. Y. On the morning eucceeding my transter to No. 10 I witnessed a scene in which he figured con- epicvously conclusive of this fact. A prayer meeting had been convened, when snddenly an outsider insisted on taking a small benca— the only one, by the way, in the room—in pos- sersion of Mr. Sherman, who, as I afterwards Saw, was the leader of the meeting. “Tl fight you for that bench,” said the out. sider, taking off his coat. +1 chan’t go there to fight yor,” replied Mr. Sherman, “but attempt to take away this bench and I'll give you 8 camned licking.” The outsider advanced and mi & demon- stration to seize the bench. The fist of Mr. Sherman cuddenly leaped from the rightshoule der, and that outsider dropped. «We have settled the case of that damned cuse,” said Nr.
