FROM MEMPHIs, Arrival of Cotten—Firing into Steamers— Inauguration of Arkansas State Ofi:cers, Caro, Feb. 1.—The steamer Darling Silver Mcon, from Memphis, passed up for Cincin- nati to-day, with 1,749 bales of cotton. The Rebels Retreating, Pursued by Ow Troops. y HEADQUARTERS, WESTERN VIRGINIA, Feb. 3.—After we drove the enemy from the bridges yesterday the rebels commenced a rapid re- treat, our cavalry closely following them up and skirmishing ensuing. Last night a portion of General Sullivau’s forces, in attempting to cut the enemy off, en- countered a large force of rebels in Mechauics- burg Gap, near Romney, aud in the neighbor- hood of this gapa fight took place. We eventu- ally succeeded in compelling the enemy to take another road to the right, and they skedaddled with considerable precipitancy. In this engagement we took a number of prisoners. In retreating the enemy hastened to make a junction with the main rebel forces near Moorefield. It is believed that General Sullivan’s and Colonel Malligan’s columns have formed a junction, and are now pursuing the rebels vig- orously.
