THE EVENING STAR. | Jeff. Davis's Letter to the Pope—The Pope’s Answer. According to the Paris journal, La France, the following curious correspondence has taken place between President Dayis and the Pope: | RiceMonp, September 23, 1863. Fery Venerable Sovereign Ponti’ :—The letters which you have written to the clergy of New | Orleans and New York have been communica- ted tome. and I have rc. with emotion the Weep grief therein éxpressed for the ruin and j devastation caused by the war which is now being waged by the United States against the States and people which have selected me for their president, and your order to your clerg: ww exbort the people to peace and chari y. 5 am deeply eensible of the Ubristian charity which has impelled you to this reiterated ap- peal to the clergy. It is for this reason that I feel it my duty to express personally, and in the name of the Confederate States, our grati- tude for such sentiments of Christian good feel- ing and love, and to assure your Holiness that the people, threatened even on their own hearths with the most crael oppression and terrible carnuge, is desircus now, as it has always been, to see the end of this impious war: that we haveever addressed prayers io Heaven for that issue which your Holiness now de- sires; that we desire none of our enemy’s pos- sessions, but that we fight merely to resist the devastation of our country and the shedding Of our best bicoa, an $0 foreg them to let us live in peace under the protection of onf éwn institutions, and under our laws, which not only ensure to enjoy mentof his temporal rights but also the free exercise of his religion. I pray your Holiness to accept, on the part of myself | and the people of the Confederate States our | sincere thanks tor your efforts in favor of ace. May the Lord preserve the days ofyour »liness, and keep you under his divine pros wction. JkrrERSON Davis. TRE POPE’ MMustrious and Honore t'on:-—We have just received, w welcome, the persons sent by yuu to plac our Lands your letier, dated 23d of September Ixst, Not stight wasthe pieasure we experi- enced when we learnt, from these persons and the letter, with what feelings of joy and grati- tude you were animated illustrious aud honor- avle President, as soon as you were informed of ourletiers to our vencraple brother Joha, Archbishop of New York, and John, Arch- bishop of New Orleans, dated the 13th of Octo- ber of Jast year, and in which we have all our strength excited and exhorted those venerable brothers that m their episcopal piety and solicitude they should eudeavor, with the | most ardent wal,and in our name, to bring | about the end of the fatal civil war which has broken out in those countries, im order tha: the American people may obtain peace and con- cord, and dwell charitably together. It is articularly sgreeable tous tosee that you, Mustrious and honorable President, aud your people sre animated wita the same desires of eave and tranquility which we have in our letters incuicated upon your venerable brothers. May it please God at the same time to meke the other proples of America and their | rolers, reflecting seriously bew terrible is civil war, and what calamities it engenders, listea to the ingpirations of a calmer spirit, and adopt resolutely the part of peace. As for us, we sbsll not cease to offer up the most fervent prayers to God Almighty that He may pour ovtuyon all the people of America the epjrit of prace and charity. and that He will stop the | grextevils which afflicts them. We, at the | ®ore time, besrech the God of pity to shed | abr.ad upon the light of His grace, and attach | you to us by a perfect friendshlp. | Given at Rome, at St. Peter’s the 3d of December, 1953, of our Pontificate 12. (Signed) Pive IX. The Funeral of Mr. Thackeray. On the 30th of December the remains of Mr Tha. keray were interred in the Kensal-tireen Oemerery. The funeral procession left the pri- Yate residence of the deceased, at Kensington, shortly betore eleven o'clock, and arrived at the cemetery about noon. There was but one mourning coach, and in this and the succeeding carriage, which was the private one of the de- eased, were seated the R F.St. Jobn Taack- eray and Mr. James Roda, cousins of the de- eensed; Captain Shaw, his brother-in-law. and the Hon R. Curzon. The remaining carriages were ttose of Mr. Martin Thackeray, General Low, Lord Gardier, Sir W. Frazer, Hon. R. Cuizon, Earl Granville, Mr. Macaulay, Q. 0.4 Sir James Coiville and Messrs. Bradbury an Evans. The funeral service was read by the ehapiain of the cemetery, the Rey. Charles Stewart. When the coffin was placed in the little ehapel of the burial ground a st rong desire was manifested by nearly every one to enter the building; but the space insii2 was soon oe- eupied as far as itcould be conyentently, and the pervading reverence for the departed was quite sufficient to prevent any unseemly pres sure. After the conclasion of tke first portio! of the service, the mass of those present pro- eeeded to the grave, which is in a quiet spoton the leit side of the cemetery, and not far from the entrance gate. In looking around men ‘Were to be seen on every side whose writings | constitute the mental food of our people—the muécle and flesh of our literature. Mr. Dick- ens was naturally present, at the solemnity Some who were aware of the long establish: i friendship between the deceased and the anthor ot ‘Sartor Besartus’ looked for him, too, in the group, but Mr. Carlyle dislikes crowds, and is sll but a septuagenarian, and he was not Fecoguised among the spectators Among other mourners were Mr. Tom Taylor, Mr. Shirley Brooks, Mr. Mark Lemon, Mr. John Leech, Mr. Ten Mr. Horace May- hew—in short, the whole statt of eontributors to Punch; Mr. Robert Browning, the poet: Mr. Anthony Trollope, Mr..Theodore Martin, Mr. John Hollingshead, Mr. (+. H. Lewes, Mr. Dallas, Dr. W. Russell, Sit James Carmichael, Mr. H.Cole, Mr. Robert Bell, Mr. Creswick, ; R. A; Mr. George Cruikshank, Archdeacon ‘ Hale, Mr E Piggot, M. Louis Blane, &c. The Bumbers preseat amounted to neurly a thoa- | gand. ‘The scene at the grave, both during and after the ceremony of mterment, was extreineiy affecting. The silence was profeund, and every countenance bespoke a deep sense of the lose | which the nation as well as individuals have sustained. When the service had terminated the Misses Thackeray, the two daughters of the deceaeed, who had formed no part in the pro- | cession, but who were in the chapel, approached the open graye, and looked into it with a grief which was touching to behold. After they had withdrawn, other relatives advanced for the | same purpose, and these again were followed | by the immediate friends, and successively by almost everybody present, 1 BSTABLIBHED 1550, | Having made arran; ents ried 7 luced me to continue AWN BROKIN BSB in this city, I take this method of in- forming my patrons and the public that Geiitesn ue to loan money on ‘del sod ‘Bile, 4 | latches, Diamonds, Jewelry, Ladies’ and Genie’ | Wearing’ Apparel. &c., &e .at the old ontablis | im the rear of National Hotar n= (804 6th ISAAC HERZEBRG & BON.
