THE EVENING STAR. “FROM VICKSBURG veseeees The Fight at Milliken's Bend—Dexperate Fighting of the Negroes—A’' Battle Ex- pected Reor—The Rebrcix Cry ne Quarte:—They Murder our Wounded. Catko, June 12.—The steamer St. Cloud, frem Vicksburg Monday morning, has arrived. Heavy cannonading was heard up the Yazoo when the boat left, in a part which was not kpown. Her officers say itis believed in the camps that a battle in our rear is highly prob- able. No one believes Johnston able to raise the siege. In the fight at Milliken’s Bend, on Saturday, our force was less than 1,000, over 600 of whom were negroes. The rebels at first drove our forces some distance, nearly surrounding them. The fight waé conducted with energy and desperation by our forces, aud the rebels were held at bay until a gunboatcame to assist us. Eye witaesees report that our loss in killed was 13i, of whom 0 were negroes. The ‘wounded is abeut the same number. The list of killed is very large, in contequence of many ‘wounded being killed under the noquarter cry. The rebels left 100 dead on the field, and took away several wagon loads of wounded. ‘The negroes fought better than their white officers, many of whom, it is said, skalked. Aboat the time the battle was over, a column of rebels made their appearance at Young’s Point—all the citizens and transient persons baying been put under arms. No attack had been made when our informant left. Mexpuis, June 12.—The steamer Fort Wayne arrived up to-day. There are no later dates tham the sth. No guerillas were seen on the wa: oe. The ht at Millikeri’s Bend, on Monday last. wasa Ghee ant Ae and much largerthan at first reported. rebels were under McOul- Jough, 2,500 strong. The Federal force was three nis and the 23d Iowa. The rebels made a desperate charge at daylight. The negroes broke in confusion, but finding their captured companions slaughtered, rallied ‘with great desperaton and drove the rebels back. The less was heavy on both sides. The guerillas destroyed portions of the rail- road track near Germantown last night. The damage was slight and soon eee The rebel forces in Northern Mississippi have all been sent to Jonnston THE WORK STEADILY PROGRESSING New Positions Gained by Our Troops—New Difficulties Met With—Rebel Attack on Milliken’s Bend. . In THE REAR OF VICKSBURG, Miss, June &, via Memphis, June 11—Tkere has been no very considerable change in the situation here dor several days past. The siege is regularly progressing. Our forces gain new positions irom day to day, only to find equal difficulties presenting themeelyes from other quarters. e are mounting and advancing new large siege guns as fast as possible. There are many indications that the rebels are becoming in want of both food and amimu- nition. All deserters coming into our lines, and there are plenty of them, tell the same story of suffering and destitution in Vicks- burg. The women and children are compelled to stay in caves to avoid slaughter by shells, and of those in the caves, some have been slaughtered, a circumstance of great horror. I have heard of nothing new or startling from Gen. Johnston’s gathering host. He was at Canton ut last advices. There has been some trouble along the river from Lake Providence down to within sight of Vicksburg. The rebels have approached and threatened our post on the Louisiana shore at Milliken’s Bend. Yesterday they drove allour forces to the river’s brink, where they were saved by the gunboats. There was considera- bie fighting for two days, the loss on both sides being severe. Two or more colored regiments constituted the principal Union force. The be- havior of the regiments in the fighting on both days is variously stated, some saying that the: Yought heroically, others that they were inef- ficient and cowardly. Our loss in killed and wounded is estimated at 300. At Young s Point, yesterday, within sight of Vicksburg, on the Louisiana shore, the rebels appeared in considerable force, to the number of 500 probably. We had nothing to oppese them with but some 300 convalescent soldiers, who were hurriedly armed an~ thrown into line. The rebels formed alin. of battle, but being promptly confronted by a larger looking force than they expected, and having, probabiy, | a wholesome fear of gunboats before their minds, retreated to the woods. There wassome little firing between the pickets late in the eve- | ning, but nothing like an engagement, or even | skirmish. i | KEBEL REPORTS FROM VICKSBURG. | Rumored Capture of Milliken’s Bend, La. | Grant Steadily Advancing—Heavy Fi- | ring on the 7th and Sth of June. The following extracts are taken from the Ricnmond Dispatch of the 10th inet.: . Jackson, June 6.—Gen. Pemberton has sent word that he €an hold Vicksburg, and Gen. Johnston is to take his time to organize and discipline his forces. MosiLe, June 9.—A special dispatch to the | Tribune from Jackson, dated the Sthinst.,says there are many rumors afloat, the most reliable of which is that Gew. Kirby Smith, instead of | being at Port Hudson, has .taken Milliken’s | Bend, and cutoff Grant’s supplies. It is re- ported that Jackson’s cavalry bave cut their | way into Vicksburg. Jackson has evidently | cone something. Heavy firing is heard from the direction of Vicksburg. Col. Grierson is | believed have been driven five miles from | Clinton, La, | Monitz, June 9.—A special dispatch to the ! Advertiser und Register, from Jaekson, dated | | the &th, says a courier from Vicksburg reports cheeringly. Onrmen are fatigued, butin good spirits. Our loss is a little over 500. Colonel arks,of La.,ismortally wounded. Waddel’s battery lost twelve killed and three wounded. Nine trains of troops, believed to be from Rose- crans’ army, arrived at Memphis on Saturday. There is mereyy a garrison at Memphis. | Jackson, June §—A scout just in from Vicksburg reports all working well. The men are in good spirits, but are somewhat wearied from lying in the trenches and exposure to the sun. Grant is slowly advancing by building parallels, which are 400 yards from the enter works. There has been no general assanlt for ten days past. There is plenty of ammunition and provisions at Vicksburg, and the soldiers and ci izens are confident of the result. Our entire loss during the series of assaults does not exceed 600. There was heavy firing with | musketry and artillery yesterday, and of ar- tillery to-day. MopniLz, June 9.—A private dispatch from Jackson, on the sth inst., reports Vicksburg as allright. Kirby Smith is in possession of Mil- liken’s Bend. The Dispatch, in an editorial, says: Our telegrams from the Southwest still con- tinue to be of the most cheering character. The brave garrison of Vicksburgis as confidentand determined as ever, and Kirby Smith, with 10,000 men, is said to occupy Milliken’s Bend, some 20 miles above Vicksburg, and has cut off Grant’s supphes, It will be noticed that all the reports concur that the Yankee losses at Vicks- burg and Port Hudson have been enormous. It is no wonder that Grant calls for reinforce- ments. @7- The Winchester (Tenn.) Republican com- plains of Gen.
