ee ee THE SS re phn ony THE RAP- Stuart’« waheae Movement Completely Foiled—Galiant Charges by our oars | The Rebels Driven Back on both Flanks. New York, June i0—The Times? epecial Wispateh, dnted Beverly Ford, on the comet | ‘of the Sth imstant, says: General Pleasapton at | ‘daylight crossed the Rappa™annock in two columns, his right at Beverly's Ford and bis deft at Kelly's Ford, six miles delow. The fords were captured without loss. Beveriy’s Ford "was taken by # spirited dash of the 9th Hlinms and Sth New York cavalry regiments. We “were on the south side before the enemy were of it Gen. Gregg took Kelly’s Ford with | a sight skirmish and no lose. The right column, under (jen. B had ‘proceeded only a mile from the river when ele { ‘eame upon Gen. Jones's whole brigade, who had suet shaken themselves out of sleep and | ‘were in time to receive us. The fight commenced and continued from 5 &. milo 3p. m., by which time the entire force of Stuart, consisting, according to papers found inthe cum Ese efartillery, had been engaged and driven three miles on the right and five miles on the Jett, with heavy loss. Uur forces succeeded in forming a junction near Brandy Station at 2 o'clock, when the fighting of both columns under Buford and Gregg was very galiantly done. Not a single instance of 2 ag bea hands occur- red. The grandest chatge was by: tne 6th, Penneylvama cavalry, supported by the 6th Fat ow pee when they: dashed on the whole ‘fe enemy were taken in flank by another brigade, and though thoroughly wered, Fossa mee est their way out. Two regiments of en. (tregg’s” brigade, under Cok. W. ham and Colonel ick, had hot w all the morning, but drove. ry enemy. from the river to Brandy Station: rebeis were -numeri- eally superior to us, ee our small sup- porting force of infantry. Notwithstanding this we drove them back hxntisomely, and captured 2C0 prisoners and one stand o! colors. ‘They had five large brigades under command of Generals Fitzhugh Lee, W. F.H. Lee, Jones, Field, and Robinson, with sixteen pieces of ar- tillery, under Maj. Breckham. They had been reviewed the previous day by Gen. Lee, and were under orders to leave on their grand raid into Maryland and Pennsyl- vania to-morrow, Wednesday, morning. Im- pores’ Pupers haye been captured in the camp of Jones’ brigade, showing strength of the whole rebe} force, and its intentions. . The fight was dizcontinued about 3 o’clock, the rebels falling back upon strong infantry supports, which came up by rail from Cul- peper, supposed to‘ be part of Longstreet’s force, which, from letters taken, we learn was in that vicinity on Saturday. Our forces returned almost unmolested to this side of the river during the afternoon, the enemy declining to make any serious attempt to regain their lost ground. The loss cf the enemy in killed, wounded and prisoners far exceeded our own. We gottwo or three of their brigades under fire of our ar- tillery with shell of short fuses, and tore them awfully. Tue CLASSES UNDER THE CONSCRIPTION.— The conscription bill divides citizens liable to dratt intotwo classes. One comprises allable- bodied men between the ages of twenty and thirty-five, married or unmarried; and all un- married men between the ages of thirty-five and forty-five. The second class includes all married men between the last named ages. It turns out, according to the enrollment in New ‘York city, that the proportion of the first class to the second is nearly as four to one. There is no reason why the same ratio should not hold good throughout the country generally. In the extreme tier of Western States. the Territories, and California, the proportion of the first-class to the second will undoubtedly be larger. As the second class is not to be drawn upon until | the first class is putinto service, it appears that the Benedicts between thirty-five and forty-five stand but little chance of the draft; in fact may be considered as practicatlyexempt trom it unless the war becomes one ef extermi- nation on both sides. w7- Under the head of slip-knots, the New- buryport Herald says 2 gentleman resides in | that city who is withont a wife, thongh two ‘women are living to whom he has been mar- ried. One of the women has been married to two men, both living, and the other to three, all of whom are still young and active. On her Inst marriage she sent toa friend saying that sbe had got an excellent husband, and he was not the first one of the same kind she had been biessed with. aa The corporate limits of Augusta, Me.,em- brace 60 square miles, and in some of the wards they kill wild bears. @s The town authorities of Gray, Maine, bave sereee to pay abounty of $300 to every man ar: m7 Itis oat Gen.
