The affair attracted a large crowd, who fol- lowed the thieves to the depot, greeting them with taunts and jeers, and making merry with the query, “How are you pickpockets !” &c. The last three above named were handcuffed, and decorated with placards bearing the in- scription “thief and pickpocket, party were young men, and w teelly dres rather rene aud while some of them hung their heads hame at the position in which they were p!2ccd, others stared abont with hardened looxs. Among the party was J.C. F. McNaughton, who, it will be remembered, was arrested some time ago on the charge of robbing the late Lieut. This should not be permitted. The roads can be | made in good condition, there being ample provision tor thesume. The Levy Court nas some members who reside in the county and are interested in h2ving the roads kept in a passab!¢ order, and ifthey will use their in- tiuence With the cir members the diflicalty will be obyizied. To stranre.s it may appear strange that the Presicent appoints citizens of ‘Waspinrton as members of the Court. This is to guard the city arainst unnecessary expense on the roads, as Washington has to pay its arte si if good and intelligent men are Bypoinied on the court unnecessary expense will be ayoid- ed. Whatever is done for the good of the road is beneficial to the city and its gain. In the appointment of members of the court, possibly the President is not acquainted with a single individual. The list is furnished to him by the Department of State, receiving it from some interested individual. Fie power of the Levy Court is ample to keep the roads in repair, which should be re- quired. Let any one travel the road from Boundary street up to the hospitals on Four- teenth street, and he will see that part of one day's work of a man with pick and spade, would relieve the water on the west side of the hill and make the road passable. Atten- tion is called to this one point to convince all that there is some one wanted to have aneye to small matters, which by neglect magnify.
