It is to be hoped that none will “go into conniptions” over the dispatch from the Army of the Potomac, which (according to a telegram in to-day’s Star) the Herald publishes this morning, alleging an advance of Lee’s army, via Culpeper—that L. has issued a preclama- tion to that effect, &e. ‘We can assure the public that no such im- Ppreesion existed Iast evening among those necessarily best informed fh onr Army of the Potomac. Gen. SickJes—who, by-the-by, is on his way to a salt water bathing place at the North, to remain there a few. days for the | benefit ef his health, that is quite impaired— reached here this morning direct from his com- ; mand, and assures us that there were no move- ments on the part of the rebel army up to last night to justify belief in the correctness of the Herald's dispatch above alluded to. THE ADVICES FROM GRANT'S ARMY. We learn that the President has received nothing directly trom General Grant since last Friday, though of course ‘he gets unofficial accounts of rumors brought to Memphis and elsewhere concerning the progress of the siege of Vicksburg. What more or less of these ru- morsare worth, may be judged from the fact | that one of them received night before last from Nashville, asserted that Joe Johnston had telegraphed Bragg that though Pemberton had been beaten on Saturday last, on the following day he (J.) had whipped Grant thoroughly and en.irely relieyed Vicksburg! This story was of course of secesh origin, and has subse- quently turned out to be without the least foundation in truth. We mey simply add that the weight of the information from that quarter in which some reliance can be placed, leads to the conclusion that Grant has, step by step, driven the rebels into their interior entrenchments, turning the | others against them; and that as they have more troops to relieve each other as often as may be desirable in defending that line of their works, he is continning, without serious (if any) mo- lestation from Johnson so far, to assail them successtully, but gradually, in order to take as much care as he should take of the lives of his troops engaged in the desperate fighing of such gseige. : PRIS! Beall was the only cer near, and he summoned to his aid three ‘wagon-masters, who assisted him in grresting eignt of the rioters, who were conveyed to the Fourth Ward station in the vehicles that con- eyed them to the pic-nic, and they were locked up. . About seven o’clock the remainder of the party began to enter the city, rioting and fight- ing all the way. At the teamsters’ quarters near Swampoodie, the colored crowd cama into collision with some white teamsters, and another general fight ensued, in which one or two of the teamsters were badly bruised. For- tunately Roundsman Eckloff and Jas. Hand. ley, officers of the Fourth Ward, met near the scene of riot, and dispersed the rioters by cap- turing three of the principal participants. This morning the case was taken up by Jus- tice Giberzon. Wright, of Cal- ifornia, who, not being able to get inside, stood on the back platiorm for awhile, but his place becoming uncomfortable, he got off and ran ta get on the front platform. At this time, car 31, which was coming down on the other track, jumped eff, and they ran together, Mr. Wright being caught between them, his body being jammed and head slightly cut. Mr. Wright was at once taken to the office of the Company, and Dr. Smith and Mr. McHenry, of the Sani- tary Home, were soon in attendaace, and did all in their power to make him comfortable, and furnished au ambulance to take him to the residence of Col. Leslie, No. 151 F street. Drs. Riley and Smith are both in attendance, and, after an examination, pronounced him t? be badly bruised, but with no hones broken. As it was, Mr. W. had a very narrow escape. It is but just to say that the driver of 31 checked the car when it ran off, but it being then on a down grade, he did not succeed until Mr. W. was injured. By J.C.
