Waters and W from same committee, asked to be discharged trom further consideration of the account of the market-master, and moved its re- ference to committee on the market-house; com- inittee discharged and account so referred. Mr. Williams, from the special committee to which was referred the resolution from the Alder- men instructing the committee before Congress ‘n relation to various matters, reported said reso- Jation without amendment, and recommended its passage; laid on the table temporarily. Mr. ge, from the committee of ways and means, reported an ordinance a: nendatory of the ordinance making an a spropriation for dredgin, the west channel of the y otomac river, and state that in the absence of any report trom the com- missiouers of the sinking fund he would press the se of this ordinance instead of that offer y Mr. Tenney at the last meeting. (Mr. D erdinance provides for the issue of notes of this Corporation of $500 each or upwards, bearin legal interest, to the wmount of 35,000, or as iach thereof as may be necessary, redeemable at the Pleasure of the Corporation, and directs the com- missioners of the sinking fund to receive said notes in lieu of interest money.] * Mr. Tenney said the commissioners of the sink- ing fund had made no response, because the reso- qe son of inquiry only passed one board last meet- ug, and bad just coure up, only a few minutes since passed by the Board of Aldermen. ‘She resolution from the Board of Aldermen, a inting P.T. Berry, W.S. Cox and E.D. tT. iyers additional members of the committee to represent the interests of the town before Congress, coming up for consideration, Mr. Stake desired to kaow what the Board of Aldermen meant, or what it was they expected Not more than a week since, a resolution this board to appoint a new comuittee, and @ong the names on that committee were one or more of the very names now proposed to be added to the old committee bythe other board. ED. 'T. Myers was one of these names. The Board of Aldermen tabled the resolution from this board, and now ask us, in the face of the manner in ‘which they treated our resolution, to pass this substitute of theirs. Let us pursue the sarae course they did. At the proper time I shall move to lay ihe resolution on the table. Mr. Tenney.—If we can’t get all we want, Mr. President, (1 am not gj king my own sentiments when I say we want, but those of the board,) let us take what we can get. I voted against the reso- jution which passed this board, because [ thought it treated the mayor with discourtesy—the mayor, and not the acting mayor, though I have seen him so styled ina printed report. The gentlemen pro- posed to be placed on this committee are not of my party, but I am willing to vote for them. Mr. Dunlop would add these names if some were stricken off. Hedid not want the commit- tee too large, and saw no necessity for increas- i 4 t. King expressed similar sentiments, but had wet ae an of Mr D.T. Myers, be- cause be was the proper representative of the w: Jntereas of the towne wacwane +. Williams was opposed to adding any ames to the committee as it aes present constituted, and ae the resolution would not pass. Mr. Stake opposed the passage of this resolu tien, because every Corporation has a right to appoint its own commitices. His resolution for that porpose wes well considered, and not framed ner acted on iu a burry, and passed this Board by eu almost unaniwous vote. He hed tried to select a committee af good meu; had added the name of E. D.'T Myers, at Mr. King’s Suggestion; but had uniutentionally left off the name of a mem- ber of the o— commitice ‘who is also a mem- ber cf the Board of Aldermen, and that no doubt was the reason of the failure of the resolution in that Beard. He was not op d tothe gentle- man.and if be bad known e was member of the present committee, would have kept bim on. i Al ~ ‘i be, “so = that expression of ‘act- Mayor’ is concerned, | was re ‘a correctly. =a I shall always style Hoary Addiocs acting Mayor, until the people at the ballot-box bave decided otherwise; 2s I do not believe that he is beg ron legally Mayor of Georgetown. t. The names Proposed by the other Boerd are those of very table gen- uemen, very efficient. Mr. Cox, for instance, ‘i gent'eman of taleut and industry. It will be a slight to refuse to add the nemes of those gentle- men. The last Board did net change other com- mittees; for ‘natance, proxies ie ae the interest of the town in the oy itan Railroad Company, who were appeinted in 1853. | regret new we did not change them, ‘for they now make & report lu which they style Henry Addison acting Mayor of Georgetown Dod, d the gentleman to port to Congress, in style Mtr. Addison acting Mayor? €'s questich elicited an explanation, it appeurs that the expression was pow before Congress from the 'd railroad. I will not by an: Mr. Addison as Mr. T suggested off Mr. Grawfo ’s name from his committee, and Congress ee then decide (having ‘‘the Mayor’ on the committee) the salty! juestion of who is the Mozet. It had gone e Circuit Court, then to the Supreme Court, then here, and now let Congress decide. The gentlemen a the resolution giving Mr. Crawford $1,000, w! Te- ferred to the committee on claims, had e to the ib of the but that committee wot Ss sp the resolution here for a vote on it, in! en lemen have elected all the members of te of Haman. They refuse to put upon the committee the name of one who is acknowledged by all to be the most efficient member ever sent from here. Mr. Dunlop thought eight a sufficient number, and that the committee should have a majority of the same political complexion as the boards. Mr. Tenney said the gentleman (Mr. Stake) said he would not recognize Mr. Addison as Mayor, but he was obliged to do it every night he came here. Did not the gentleman vote against the Mayor’s veto of a resolution, and was not that @ recognition? : Mr. Fearson objected to Mr. Addison because he had a habit of charging for his services on all ceasions, and getting pay from folks about town. ‘*Look at your books of the Corporation and find there what he has got, and for what. I hold now in my desk his sign manual that he would not make a charge for looking after the bridges. I want a guarantee that he will not charge for b' services on that committee. I won’t trust him.” Mr. Tenney asked if Mr. Addison had ever made any charge for special services while he was Mayor of the town—or acting Mayor aé he is — here? . Fearson thought he had. Mr. Tenney said the money was not paid to Mr. Addison for special services while he was Mayor; that $500 had been paid him for his services in opposing a dismemberment of the town while Mr. Crawford was Mayor, because Mr. Crawford was not equal to the task. Mr. Stake.—Does the gentleman give the credit of that measure to Mr. Addison ? Mr. Tenney.—Not credit, but the cash Mr. Stake said they were very liberal, but he was of opinion others deserved credit for defeating that dismemberment, and said that Mr. Addison had charged #500 for information in relation to the sinking fund which he got while he was acting as Mayorand aiding the clerk, Mr. Mountz, which information he had locked up in his own bosom until he was paid to give it, an act which old citizens, even his old friends, condemned. Mr. Hill said he was not there asan advocate of Mr. Addison, but was willing to give every one his*due, and thought it inexpedient and unadvi- sable to change the committee at this tine, when legislation in relation to the Long Bridge, and other matters of interest to the town, were being considered in Congress. ; Mr. Stake mentioned asa proof of the inefficiency of the present committee that an appropriation of $25,000 for the public schools of V ‘ashington had been under consideration in Congress, and nota word said of Georgetown. (The vote was taken on Mr. Tenney’s amend- ment with the result announced in imy letter of Saturday.) Mr. Williams being in the chair, Mr. Pickrell explained his pe ition and his vote. He had no objection to the Mayor, but had little hopes the resolution would the other Board. “All must see and know and feel the importance of having the town pepesy represented before Congress What are the facts now? We find the Mayor (I recognize him as such, or acting Mayor, it is all one) now appeeing ont most important ‘interests, and urging, with Mayor Berrett, the claims of a private stock company, one I do not know or care or ask whether he has an immediate private in- terest in.’’ He was willing to accord to Mr. Ad- dison the merit of great al him as a most selfish man. Mr. Tenney spoke in defence of Mr. Addison, and justified the two appropriations of $500 each, already alluded to, and the $500 to defend his suit Mayor, but although opposed to the town appro. priating anything for the Metropolitan Railroad Company, Would not agree with Mr. Addison in his opposition to that road before Congress. If Mr. Addison was misrepresenting the town, as ora of the committee, instruct him as to his uties. E itl censured Mr. Addison in rather severe terms for his course last session in advocating the claims of a company who wanted to build this horse railroad and have its terminus on the other side of Rock Creek, outside our limits, and gave a sketch of the legislation in Congress in relation thereto, and Mr. Addison’s connection with it. A discussion ensued in relation to the pips ele itan Railroad Company; during which Mr. Ten- ney stated that a great deal had been said about the $1,500 paid to Mr. Addison, but that he (Mr. A) had saved the town $1,500 every year, that being the amount of interest which would have accrued yearly on the bonds of the Metropolitan Railroad for $25,000, which he refused to sign as mayor. ‘he resolution passed, as stated in my letter of Saturday last, but was rejected by the Ald: r nen. The resolution in relation to laying a footway on the south side of Road st.was lost by a tie vote Mr. Stake presented the account of Mrs. Lewis, and moved its reference to claims committee; so referred. And the board adjourned to Friday eve- ning next, at 7¥ o’clock. The Board of Aldermen passed a resolution in relation to granting J. L.. Shackelford a fish stand on the west side of the market-house; also, Mr. Dodge’s resolution of inquiry 2s to the propriety of drawing $5,000 from the sinking fund to dredge the channel. ity, but characterized ARRIVALS AT THE HOTELS.
