Maine. The antecedents of the parties are as follows Heiress was a brunette, black eyes, black curls, high mettle. and not of age. Heiress had determined to dispose of her little white hand us she chose, consequently, had married some years ago at an anusual green and tender age. and without the conseni of her parents. Husband died, and heiress returned to her motber in sackcloth and ashes. Governor was magnanimous and placed $30,000 in the bank, Subject to her disposal. Sailor boy, we are grieved to say, was a hard ease, gave his parents much trouble, and con- sequently was sent to sea as a punishment and aremedy. He returned from an Australian eruise still harder. Had plenty of money, and went to Boston. Met heiress; love at first sight; ropes made oat of bed quilts; dark lanterns; revolver; come to these arms, and so forth. Maid of Athens,* ere we part, Give. Since writing that com- munication I have conversed with a gentleman in the employment of the Government at the Assay Office in thiacity. From the informa- tion thus acquired I am led to believe that the swindlers in jewelry are not confined to one quarter of the city, but that even in the most tashionable Broadway shops “all is not gold that glitters.”” The practice of adulterating the precious metals is carried to such an extent that nine tenths of the so-called “gold ornaments,”’ pins, bracelets, rings, chains, &c., worn by both sexes, be fairly estimated to contain on au average. not over 20 per cent. of real gold. My informant assured me that in one case a heavy gold fob chain, bought in Broadway at a cost of eighty dollars, and deposited at the As- say Office for melting, was upon assay found to contain just eight dollars worth of gold, the balance of weight being made up of an alloy of copper and zine. Large lots of gold ornaments, estimated by their owners at a value of sixteen dollars to the ounce, not unfrequently returns a twentieth, and seldom over tenth of their supposed value. In the article of gold watches tae most enormous frauds are perpetrated. I am warranted in asserting that scarcely one in a hundred of the gold watches for sale in the stor: and so prodigally worn by ‘Young cxiea,”’ is what it purports to be. or intrin- sicully worth ten percent. above the cost of manufacture. inthe sale of silver ware the same deception is practiced, though not to so great an extent. A large lot of table ware lately purchased from an extensive Broadway dealer, and guaranteed to contain ninety per cent. of pure silver, upon test showed a de- ficiency. of twelve per cent. below stated value. In still another case, a gentleman of my ac- quaintance deposited with aleading manufac- turer of silver ware a quantity of Mexican dol- lars to be made into forks-and spoons of a specified value, ninety percent. pure silver. Subsequent examination proved a fraud of nearly fifty per cent.— New York correspoud- ence of the Schoharie Republican. It struck me at the time that many infants must be destroyed, and I went to the small tower, not far from Shanghai, into which the bodies of children are cast. The tower covers a well, and stands about twenty feet hi, h; at the upper part are two small arched windows, through which the children are thrown. On climbing up to look down through the windows, I was horrified to find, that not only was the well full, but the tower piled to the top with bodies' The keen frosty weather revented putrefaction giving earlier notice of the dead pile there accumulated. The infants were wrapped in mats or old clothes; but there was nothing to lead to the belief that they were thrown there alive, or that they reef been killed; and without better evidence than ex- ists, the Chinese at Shanghai should have the benefit of the doubt, and we may believe that most of the children died a natural death, and were deposited in this recognized reecptacle for their corpses, to save the expense of a regular burial. At the foot of the tower remains of smell fires were visible, showing that offsprings had been made to “joss,” through that most glaring of cheats, paper syce. The strongest evidence against the tower is its proximity to a Buddhist nunnery; these are often most dis- reputable oe: There was one at Foochow, in which the nuns behaved so grossly that they were put tedeath;and the funds of the nunnery ay to the Government — Twelre Year's ta China ene ae i> Dr. Magoon, of the First Baptist Church, Albany, administered baptism last Sabbath to a young girl about 16 vears old, who was in the last stages of consumption. She felt that forgiven her sins, and she could not be content to leave the world till she had acknowledged her Lord before men in the way of Hisown eppointment. After some doubt and hesitation her wishes were complied with, and she was carried to the Bapustry in the arms of several brethren of the Church, having on the white robes which were understoud to be her grave-clothes, and was immersed by the pastor. The scene was one of the most sores, br witnessed, and the congregation was bathed in tears. No in- jury occurred ‘o her from the baptism, and in ney afternoon she attended — to join the Church in observing the Lo: Supper. ‘The editor of Bell’s Life in London is de- lighted with that distinguished Mr. Jobn Morrissey, who has lately arcived tn Eng- land. “His mug is all over that of a pugilist, and there is a look about him which convinces one at once that he would prove a tough customer to any one.” Morrissey, according to Bell’s Life, bas bet $3.0 0 on Sayers. i[7- The Maryland Court of Appeals have af- firmed the decision below, affirming the constitu- tionality of the new police nw for Baltimore. Eben ot, XV. Two Vatvaare Pictures Sroitep.—A writer in the New York Express gives an account of the almost total destruction of two valuable pictures in that city—one historical and the other a por- trait. The former one alluded to is Leutzes’ justly celebrated painting representing an incident in the early life of Frederick the Great, and familiar with many of our readers from the fact that it has heretofore been on exhibition at the Art Gallery in this city. The incident selected by the artist occurred at a grand ball given by the King, Frederick's father, who, charmed with the conduct of one of bis daughter. quietly sent to the prison where the Prince was confined, and ordered him instantly into his, the King’s, presence. Frederick, then a bandsome young man, dressed ina suit of plain black. stayed the summons, passed through the ante-chamber of the palace, and reached the grand ball-room unrecognised, until his sister, who was singularly attached to him, sprang for werd, when the young Prince fell on his » before her, and was the next instant in her em- ace. ‘This painting Mr. Leutze, a few days since, left banging, in apparent safety, in his studio in Tenth street, New York, where it remained in quiet, the artist himself being out of the city. Unhappily, the cord which suspended the heavy frame broke, and the pire fell face forward upon the top of an easel setting below it; the con- sequence was that the wedge shape of ‘the easel entered the canvas, which, in its descent, tore and almost irretrievably destroyed the magnifi- cent specimen of art—a fact that will be received with regret throughout this country and Europe. The facts in regard to the other accident are as follows, in the language of the correspondent:— ‘Among the contributions to the present exhibi- tion of the National Academy are five or six splen- did portraits, by C. 1. Elicit, who has long been ranked as first in bis profession; in fact, since the incuguration of ‘imperial photographs,’ Mr. K- liott is at the head of the few portrait painters who have maintained their ground. and, by their genius, sustained the artistic value of this depart- ment of art. Byaccident, no doubt, all of Mr. El- Hott's pictures are ‘badly hung’—put up in places difficult of access to the eye of the spectator. When he went to the exhibition and discovered this treatment, he was naturally incensed. and more particularly so, when one of the heads that he especially prided bimself upon was stuck away in the hall denominated by the public “The Hos- pital for Invalid Daubs,” it being not ouly con- signed to this oaey of floatwood, but so badly placed that it was absolutely out of sight, or more, Just visible enough to be entirely out of any avail. able view. In a moment of what we think (con- sidering Mr. Elliott’s Proverbially-quiet manner) was just indignation, he took out his knife and cut the portrait out of the frame, and thus almost destroyed a head which has never had a superior painted in this country, and few of any era could equal it in Europe. EEE Ij" A novel case of habeas corpus, involving curious and important questions of law, was re. cently tried before Judge 3 M. Moore of the Cir- cuit Court, Covington, Ky. A resident of that city, named William Ross, a short time since, became enamored with his step-daughter, Marga- ret Co'eman, who reciprocated bis affections, and @ marriage engagement was the consequence. But the aia e-d pair found that their relat! onship was among the degrees prohibited by the laws of Kentucky. Butthe river was easil passed, and once in Obio the restraints of the [aw would be removed—marriage between blood relatives alone being probibited in that State. They according- ly visited Cincinnati, were united in matrimony, and returned home rejoicing. The friends of tbe — however, were dissatisfied with the nup- jials, and determined to separate them. The girl being a few months under 21 years of age—the period of female majority in Keatucky— and till the marriage having been under the guardianship of a man named Hall, but who had resigned as soon as the event had taken place, » uardian named Elisha Coleman, a relation of the faye was appointed for the occasion, and a writ of habeas corpus was sued on Ross, commanding him to produce his wife before Judge Moore, and show by what authority she was detained by him. The proper evidence of the marriage was pro duced, and the fact that she was more than IS yea of age, which concluded the period of her nfancy at the place where the marriage was sol- emnized, were procured in Court. The attorneys for the guardian claimed that as the (plies were residents of Kentucky, a marriage elsewhere, to evade the laws of that State, was null and void. The Judge sustained the positions nullified the marriage. and gave the lady into the custcdy of Mr. Coleman a Excitement In Jer, Hundred Menand Bo: in Arms.—The Louisville Democrat of the Ith inst. says: Our readers will remember that some weeks ayo, the citizens held a meeting, in which they protested against the employment of the penitentiary convicts outside of that institution as demoralizing, and for other reasons, and resolved to notify the Superinten- dents that if this should be persisted in, the people would use forcible measures after the Ist instant, to prevent it. No attention having been paid to this warning, a meeting was held on the 9th inst. at which arrangements were perfected to carr: out their previously expressed intention. (Aceon ingly about 7 o’clock yesterday morning the tire bells were rung. and the citizens to the number of about 150 men, and about the same number of boys, assembled and proceeded in a body to where the convicts were at work. Messrs. Crutchfield & Kegwin bad about 12 employed in their brick-yard, which they took in charge, with about forty employed in wood chopping, and zlso a number employed on the turnpike, which they marched to the prison. The yates Were opened, and all were admitted. They then went to tke brick-yard on the premises of the prison, where convicts were employed and de- manded them, and the crowd dispersed. In marching through the streets to the prison the convicts threw up their hats and wave three cheers for Dave Miller. Mr. Miller is the present lessee of the penitentiary. The Warden says he will have them all out again to-day, if the weather rmits. The citizens threaten to drive them Roe as often as they are brought out, and if that does not answer they will dress them up in citi- zen’s clothes and let them fly. {177 An eccentric friend stepped into a store— which shall be nameless—where some ‘‘color.d brethren” were doing a little trading. ‘Ab!
