Assoctation.—The Teachers’ As- sociation of the District of Columbia held its regular monthly meeting on Saturday at the Smithsonian {nstitution, Prof. L. C. Loomis in the chair. The segue order of business being the subject of Arithmetic, Prof S$ L Loomis commented on the unsatisfactory mode of teach- ing this branch, usually practised in the common schools. and pointed out the defects in the pres- ent system le thought thet the trouble was that boys ceased to think and exercise their minds in independent investigations, and were hampered too much by the rules laid down in the books. Colburn’s Mental Arithmetic was a = good work in this respect, but those that had gone through that did not know how to use aslate. He spoke in high terms of Colburn’s Sequel. Prof. Z. Richards concurred with Prof. Loomis. He said that Colburn’s Mental Arith. metic not designed to fit the pupil fora business life, but only as disci linary of the mind, and to lead the way to Colburn’s Sequel. On motion, the subj-ct of Arithmetic. having especial réference to Loomis’s Normal Arithme. tic, was continued for discussion at the next meeting of the Association. Prof. Richards stated that Prof Henry would deliver a lecture, by request of the Association, during the winter, and Mr. Barnard, of Mass , in the s: pring. Prof. Bache, also, had promised to give a ‘talk’? which he had no doubt would be worth hearing. The Association adjourned to the second Sat- urday in January next. Bap Company —Yesterday, a party of young- sters, and among them a man who had some money, rode in a hack from the wharf to atavern near the Railroad Depot. The moneyed man mory f drowry fell to sleep, and waking discov- ered his money was gone. ‘He accused the land- lord of taking it; but upon investigation before the Chief of Police, it was ro by his own admissions that he did not know who took it, and the accused, who always bore a fair Teputa- tion, was dismissed. Upon toquiry as to the company he bad been in, the otticers suspected one of the complainant's companions in the coach. This morning the complainant, whose name is Kelly, went to Justice Donn and wanted to swear that be saw his landlord take the money from his pocket, although he had previously stated that he was asleep at the time. The Jus- tee wa: formed by an officer of what had oc- curred, the warrant was refused. A few moments after, the landlord, who had been at work to remove suspicion from bimself, entered and demanded a warrant for Barney Barnes, the person suspected by the officers. The theft, be averred, was committed in the back, and that Barnes, who was one of the com ny, had been exhibiting from fifty to sixty dollars at various = during the night, and the persons who new him could uot account for his Possession of it. Collins, the officer on duty at the railroad depot, arrested aman named James Woodrus, charged with robbing the captain, Daniel Ireland, and a part of the crew of the schooner Buffalo Bird, of $25 in money and various urticles at the wharf. |. Lincoln, of this city, recently performed a delicate operation for the relief of a young lady who, from an acute fever, bad been for some time afflicted with awry neck.
