C., THURSDAY, DECEMBER 9, 1858. vee - me VOL. XH NO. 1,836 WASHINGTON NEWS AND GOSS?P. [DEFERRED ARTICLES.} Taz Usirep States Postar Revexce.— Some w ago, we published in the Stara tabular statement, showing the receipts from and the expenses of the postal service of the United States in the respective States of the Union during the years ending June 30, 1857, and 1858. On that occasion we were not al- lowed access to the record showing the cost of transportation, and hence our columns con- tained only the aggregate of the compensation of postmasters and incidental expenses of post offices. Through the kindness of Henry St. George Offutt, Esq., we are now able to add the expenses of transportation, copied from the official record in manuscript, as the document has not yet been printed. We give this in the following table, which affords a convenient comparison of the entire expenses of the De- partment in the several States during the years 1837 aud 1858: 1857. 185s. Well, the case he made went to the peop'e of California, forma'ly, and in due time. The result was an overwhelming popular rebuke, not of Senator Gwin, but of Senator Broderick. The story is briefly toldin the extract, from the San Francisco G/ode of the Sth ult , hereto ap; ended : Tue Reckontxe.—But a short time since King David came back to our State from Washington, like Saul of Tarsux, « breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples” of James Buchanan. Upon the floor of the Senate cham- ber, he had denounced our venerable Chief Ma- istrate in terms too indecent to repeat He had eclared him-elf openly against the Lecompton iniquity,”* and his riguteous indignation would have visited summary punishment upon the fram sof the Kansas constitution, bad he been ® citizen of that Territory, by lopping off their auricular n “ts. When our worthy Senator, Wm. M. Gwin, who nobly and gallantly stood by the Adm} tion in the hour of trial—thus truly representing the wishes of his constituen- cy—presented to the consideration of the Senate the joict resolutions of the Legistature of Cali- fornis relative to the admission of Kansas into the Union as a State, asking (hat they be read, print- ed and laid on the table—after the Clerk had Tesd them, Mr. Broderick arose and said : “* The resolutions introduced by my colleague from the Legislature of California will have no influence upon my action here now or in the fu- ture. I am satisfied that these resolutions do not express the opinions of the ple of Cali- fornia apon the question to which they refer. I am satis‘ed, sir, that four-dfths of the ple of California repudiate the Lecompton fraud. I shall respect the wishes of the people, and pay Ro respect to the resolutions passed by a Legis- lature not representiag the opinions of the people of California. 1 merely say this now for the pur- pose of placing myself right on the record.” To which Senator Gwin replied - “<I do not intend to discuss this question, as it has from the cons d-ration of the Senate 1 take Issue with the Sena‘or in bis statement as to the publicsert ment in California on this su ject, and accept the tribunal he invokes— people. Before that great tribuoal I am willing bo present myself and abide its decision, having no doubt or fear of the result Mr. Broderick wisbed it placed upon record that he, David C Broderick, the ‘king ofshoul- der-strikers and chief of ballot-box stuffers,”’ had asserted that ‘four-fifths of the people of Cali- fornia repudiate the Lecomp:on fraud,” ergo, the resolutions jatroduced by bis colleague from the Legisiatare of California would have no influ- ence upon him, because “they did not represent the wishes of the people of California.” Upon this issue David was will! to go before the tribunal of the people, and this purpose he came to California. And what has been the ver- dict of the tribunal he invoked? Let the result of our late glorious victory, which bas sent a thrill of joy to the heart of every Democrat throughout the length and breadth of the Atlan- tie States, respond We echo back to our Atlan- tie friends the “ shouts of glad Udings”” which they seat forth, and which have been wafted to our shores : How our sboulder-striking Senator will feel es resuming his seat in the Senate chamber after this severe rebuke he bas received can only be imagined by those who are as lost as himself toali honor and all honorable shame. But did the valiant David accomplish nothing while he ‘was bere Was all this wratbful indignation to ‘waste itself into thin alr? Wereall these dread- fal threateaings but sound and fury, si pifying nothing? Assure: net. David did do some- thing. Aithough State, he yet retained sufficient of his former in- fluence over a ceriaia ciass of voters in Saa F ran- cisco, who have a marvelous veneration for “ the shoulder,’’ as to lose the city to the Democracy Dovid did this much; and whatever of credit or discredit may attach thereto belongs to David.
