LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Tur Pressytertan Stxop or Vireinta com- menced its sessions last night in the Assembly's Church, and was opened with a sermon by the moderator, Rev. C.H Reed, D D , of Richmond, Va. The Church was crowded with an audience composed of members of the various Presbyterian churebes, and others, who listened with interested attention to the exceilent sermon of the Rev. Doc- tor, from the words of Scripture found in Romans, 15th chapter, 7th verse: ‘(Receive ye one another a Christ also recetved ns. to the glory of God. After the sermon bad closed the congregation. was dismissed, and the Synod was called to or- der for basiness. The roll was then calied, and the Synod entered upon the election of officers. On motion of Rev_ Mr. Carothers, it was re- solved that the first half hour of each morning nession be devoted to religious services, and that the Syned adjourn to meet at 9 o'clock, a. m This morning the Synod met at 90’clock. The ‘first balf hour was in devotional exercises; after which, the roll was called. On motion of Rev. A.G. Carothers, the Rev. DH. Emmerson, of the Pennsylvania Presby- tery. and Rev. Dr. Stephen P. Hill, of the Poto- inte Association, who were present, were invited to sit as corresponding members of the Synod. ‘Phe minutes of the last neeting, held at Rich- mond, Virginia, October 21, 1536, were read and adopted. Rev. Dr. Smith laid on the table an extract of the minutes of the Synod of Tennessee in relation to transfering that body to the Synod of Virginia, in whieb the Tennessee Synod were adverse to the transfer; which was read. On motion of Rev. A. G. Carothers, Rev. John Butler, who was present, was invited to sit as corresponding member of the Synod. Statistical reports were then made from the ——— of the various churches of the Syne ‘The statistical reports of the Presbytery furnish some interesting items. The Presbytery of Winchester reported to the Syuod that they consisted of ten ministers, eizh- teen churches, three licentiates, and had under the care of their churches five candidates for the ministry The Presbytery of Hanover reported eigbteen ministers, seventeen churches, two licentiates, and one candidate for the ministry. They report- ed farther, that on the 12th of March, 15357, they received wnder their care Mr. Oliver 1. Sloan. li- centiate of the Fourth Presbytery of Philadelphia, and om the same day they ordained him tothe full work of the Gospel Ministry. and installed him pastor of the New Kent chureh; also that, on the Ith day of April last, they granted the New Kent church leave to change their name, and to be hereafter called “Olivet”?
