U7 SINGLE COPIES ONE CENT. Eben ing Star. WASHINGTON, D. C., FRIDAY, OCTOBER 23, 1857. VOL. X. a ee of Sead a. AMERICAN SHIP-GUNNERY. The U.S. corvette Plymouth. (says a late London paper,) which has been lying in South- ampton water for the last few weeks. will, it is expected, take her departure thence in afew days. Her commander, Captain Dahlgren. the inventor of the monster gun that bears his name. has been visiting the gannery establishments of this country, where cs has received the most courteous attention from the various authori- ties. Capt. Hewlett, the head of the gunnery establishment on board her Majest, hip Bx- cellent. at Portsmouth, has paid a visit to the Plymouth, end minutely inspected everything en board of her. He appeared yosenay pleased with the new and improved smal! fire- arms. The officers of her Majesty's ship Me- Jampes, lying in Southampton water, have also visited the Piymouth. On Tuesday last, some experiments were made with the small fire- arms on beard the corvette, before # party of visitors from Southampton. The rapidity and accuracy with which these arms can be fired are extraordinary. The most prominent im- rovements in these instruments of warfare are nown as Maynard's, Perry's, aud Sharp’s pa- tents, these being the names of three American inventors. Inoneof the carbines the fore-fin- yer moves a spring, and the chamber for the | cartridge is EMS which having been filled, @ spring is moved again, and the chamber is covered; a primer. which corresponds with the percussion cap, is forced out, and the gun is ready for firing. This primer, which is ingeni- ously concealed, is rolled round like the main- spring of a watch, and lastsa longtime. In another carbine, the chamber for the cartridge is lifted out of its psoition, upwards; it is then loaded, and on being forced again into proper position, a spiral spring, in connection with a coneealed row of caps, is touched, and the gun is primed. The ramrod is, of course, done away with by these inventions. There are several improved naval and military muskets on board the Plymouth. In one of the bayoncts, when taken from the musket, isa very handy and formidable short sword. The King of Portugal was so pleased with the boat-howitzers on Loard the Plymouth when that ship visited Lisbon that he ordered some like chem, with a slight modification, to be manufactured. Such is the rapidity with which these howitzers ¢an be fired, that three balls fired successively from one gun have been in motion at the same time The boat carriages of these howitzers exhibit some improvements of Capt. Dahigren. Some interesting experi- ments have made on board the Plymouth. on ropes. cables and cordage. Some of the ropes are made of American cotton, others of Manil- la, of Swedish and of American hewp. The cotton ropes are remarkable for their softness and flexibility, and, what is very singular, they are found not to imbibe more moisture than ropes made of a much harder material, and it is believed they are equal t« the latter in strength and durability. Metallic blocks for the cordage to run upon are used fur va- rious purposes on board. The mouster gun of the ss rare weighs 16,000 pounds avoirdu- pois. It is covered with a coating of vermil- lion and beeswax, and therefore has a red in- stead of the usual black appearance of ship's guns. The heavy Dahlgren guns have two vents, whieh facilitate their rapid and safe firing. The weight of each shell they discharge is about 135 pounds, and that au solid shot is 170 pounds. The sound of the shell and shot traversing a distance of three miles, is lust in the enormous space which it traverses. One peculiarity of the Dahlgren guu is its enor- mous strength and thickness where the great- est force of the powder is expended. an periments made to test the strength of these pe one of them had been fired of nearly 000 times, with a large proportion of solid shot, without bursting. Capt. Duhlgren is of Swedish origin. eo Tae Parien Macue Art.—It was towards the close of the last century that iron tea-trays began to be imitated or superseded by papier mache, and from tone trays has gradually Sprung up an important department of industry, in wheh the cits of Mivataghcis, England, 2 cels all other places. The true pavier mache. that which was introduced about thirty years be a and from which such a wondrous variety of decorative ornaments is produced, is almost entirely paper; there may be a small percent- age of other material te impart certain minor qualities, but it is essentially paper, of any and every description. The soual ital of pa- pier mache is a pastelike mass furmed of paper alp, and pressed in moulds to any desired form. The paper, be it what kind it may, or of as many different kinds as it may, is mois- tened, and chopped and minced, and routed about until it becomes a perfectly homogeneous mass of paste, or rather a mass having a con- sistency like that of dough or of patty. A trifing D rors of other substances is then in- troduced, but not sufficient to change the gen- eral character of the mass as a paper substance. Then comes the moulding or pressing. The material is too thick to be poured into a mould like plaster of Paris, or like moulten metal ; it is pressed into flattish moulds, like clay, com position, or gutta percha. A piece is cut off, about enough for the article to be made; it is | ee well into the mould. a counter mould Plaeed upon it. and the foree of a powerful press is brought to bear upon it, so as to drive the material into every minute crevice of the mould. A knife is employed to dexterously loosen the paper at the edges; the greased state of the moull allows the paper to be re- moved from it. Then the imperfections are re- moved, and the adornments ure put on.
