SHE CHICAGO TRIBUNE: SUNDAY’: OCTOBER - 3," 1880_s'x TERN PAGES, a ing-attle, giving them only minor offices, and never deeming it necessary to convince them with arguments or conciliate them ith boneyed words. Irish-Americans are pitrerly hostile to the British aristocracy and its Government, but while the leading spirits of that Government were wishing God-speed to the Rebel Confederacy, which some Irish- men were fighting to crush, other Irishmen— st home in the North—were voting just as the Briiish aristocracy desired them to vote, that the War was a failure. And now the polk of the Irish-American citizens of the North are preparing to vote to place in au- thority in the Nation a class of people who despise them and treat them with lordly contempt. Not only this. The Solid South js teaching its children to despise Irishmen. ‘The following occurs in Blackburn’s South- erm School-History: had nothing but her galient chil- qttooutin See a ahs Gas ius one 0 stake her most precious jewels against gerne OF Europe. * How do the Irish-Americans of the North lke to be sneered at as “the trash of Eu- sore”? How long will they continue to lick the hand that smites them ? How long will they follow humbly at the heels of the men whe refer to them contemptuously as “the trash of Europe”? An immense responsi- pility rests upon the Irish-Americans of the North in the present contest. It is only through the practically solid Irish vote that the Democratic party can possibly win. Let that vote be divided as the German-American qote is divided, and every Northern State is sure to go Republican. Thousands of Irish- men fought against the “gallant children, the precious jewels,” of the Sonth in rebell- fon, and now these “gallant children,” these “precious jewels,” sneeringly refer tothem as “the trash of Europe.” But they expect fbat the “trash? will vote to place them, (the, Jewels) in ‘power.
