A Republican Majority of Thirty Thousand Predicted for Pennsylvania. ‘An Episode in the War on the Rev- enue Officers in the Peace- fal South. ’ OHIO. CINCINNATI ABLAZE. Special Dispaten to The Chicago Tribune Crvcrxnati, 0., Oct. 2.—The event of the evening, and indeed the scenic event of the campaign thus far, was the monster Repub- lican torchlight processibn which passed. through the principal streets of the city. The popular enthusiasin was at a red heat as miles on miles of uniformed marchers tramped past, and were encouraged by the plaudits of the sight-seers. The procession was two hours in passing a given point, and in its makeup was all that could be desired in the way of a moving pageant, appealmg to the voters’ hearts. Senator Conkling witnessed it from the veranda of the Lincoln Club-Honse, where he attended a select reception given. him by that organization, and was apparently interested and highly pleased with the evi- denceSof enthusiasm he beheld. He will spend Sunday quietly in the privacy of his room at the hotel, and leave Monday morn- ing for Richmond, Ind., where he is to speak for the first time in Hoosierdom Monday evening. . BEFUTATION OF DEMOCRATIC LIES. Specta! Dispatch. to The Chicago Tribune. ’ PAINESVILLE, 0., Oct. 3.—The change of sentiment caused by the ateat serlesof mass- meetings which closed last night in Cincin- nati, of which Senator Conkling was the ebief orator,’ has: been very.‘great, and has caused a large degree of alarm in the Demo- cratic’ camp. - This alarm was never -more clearly shown than in-the various lies thas have been started about-these meetings. When the announcemeént was made to tha .| country that the Grant men were defeated at Chicago, and Gen. Garfield was nominated by the united action -of the Republican leaders, the Democratic press and leaders im- mediately started the story that Senators Conkling, Logan, and Cameron would let the election zo:by default, so far as their per- sona! efforts were concerned. During tho quiet days that always follow_a nomination, these stories flourished to ‘a considerable ex- tent. Theré was held the New York confer- ence, at which it was asserted that’ Senator Conkling refused to be present, . TO GIVE THE ENTIAE LoS to these statements, Senator Conkilng agreed to do what ha.never did before—viz.: to -{ come West_on a stumping.toar. The first meeting was to be “held in the heart of the Western Reserve,—in . Gen. Garfield’s own Congressional district. ‘Lo futher emphasize the matter, it was, announced that Gen. Grant would be the presiding officer, and | that Senators Logan and: Cameron would be present. This was all thoroughly advertised, but the Dencrats said it . would not be car- ried out. ‘They. asserted. that these men would notconsent to come to Ohfo. But they did come, and so great was the enthusi- asm and anxiety tosee and hear tnem that the first meeting. was the largest. without question, ever ‘held, inthe State. Not satis- fied with this, the Senators and Gen. Grant, as soon after the Warren ineeting as it was possible for them to reach Mentor by special train, made a friendly and social calf on Gen. Garfield at his home, and mutual congratula- tions were extended. - It would have scemed that ail this would have SATISFIED THE MOST CAPTIOUS DEMOCBAT; but not-so. Inimediately after the meeting, it was asserted that the New York Senator was more disgruntled-than ever; that he did not refer to Gen. Garfield in bis speech; and that his visit at Mentor was too short. ‘Phe speeches which Senator Conkling de- livered at Warren and Cleveland are satticient answers to the first fie, and 1 have just been gathering material to answer the second. In his Warren speech, Senator Conkling re- terred to Salmon P. Chase in the most glow- ing termsas the great Obioan who had planned the financial policy which saved the Nation during ‘the dark days of the Rebellion; and expressed the hope and solemn: trust that Gen. Garfield would be the man who woald save the country in the present crisis. How could he well nave said. more? He followed the plau that is pursued by the Republican orators generaily this year—viz.: te discuss the two parties, and say very iittle about candidates. ~In his Cleveland speech, after showing the evils that would result from Democratic accession to power, Senator Conkling told his hearers that the election of Garfield and Arthur would prevent theso evils, and urged them to vote the Republican ticket, How could ho HAVE DONE MORE? In regard to tho alleged coldness at the meeting of Garfield and Conkl.ng, I took pains fo visit Mentor this morning, and had interviews with Gen. Gartield’s_ near friends who were present at the meeting. and they pronounce the assertion a base and ground- jess fabrication. I talked with genttemen who are fauilint, with Senator: Coubilaxs ways, and they si ey we;re $ at ths curdiality which he displayed. The interview was a very pleasant one, and all that any one could have wished. Conklin; ana Garfield have always been friends, an the former is very auxiuus for the success of the Republican party this fall. Since the great_meetings at Warren and Cleveland I have visited a large number of the principal towns in Northern Ohio, and the feaders of the Republican party every- where report that the ranks were never bet+ ter organized, ‘ NOR THE PEOPLE MORE ALIVE. The Western Reserve, when it is so thor- oughly aroused as to get its voters out to the polls, turns-up the Republican ‘majority which Is decisive in: the State. There never was an instance of Democratic success in the State for the past twenty years, except when the Republicans of the rve were luke- warm, and stafed away from the polls to dig tatoes orhusk corn, y have as big crops his year as were ever known, but they beouttoa man at the October election, and show large gains. It is the general opinion
