After the mother had thrown the child out, her husband tried to seize her and she threw him vidlently to the flo r and a party of men rushed to his aid, oneof whom was also thrown to the floor. Five mer finally over- powered her aud six men, including two officers, were required to carry her to the wagon for removal to the station house. Mrs, Doyle has beensuffering from malaria for the past month and was at times very flighty. During the past week, she had a mania for wandering away from home. California Folitics. Octoberd—1s. . —At10 c’clock Sunday morning a fire was diecovered in the ceiling between tne engine room and laundry in the rear ot the St. Charles Hotel, which was at first thought to be but slight, buc subsequently turned out to be more serious than anticipated. The hotel engine was immediately vat_to work and an alarm turned in. The sslvage Corps was quickly on ' the scene and attempted to_check the fire but to no avail, asit had reached the elevator and the draft, caused by the same, fauning the flamesto such an extent that they reached theroof of the building, In the meantime, the fire department went to work on the | b Common street side of the structure and in a short time had streams of wate: pouring on the burning maes in »ll directions. Thewildest panic and confusion prevailed rmong the guests and em loyes of the hotel; ever;one rushing with their personal effocts, seeking a place of safety. The united exertions of the fire department and the Salvage and Babcock corps suc- ceeded in getting the flames extin- guished at 12 o'clock. Connelly de- mands that reference from responsible and well-known persons be furnished a3 to the character and responsibility of the applicants in order to protect the immigrants sgainst imposition. The commanications invariably sug- geat “Trish preferred.” Mr. Connel ly sent 75 immigrant laborers to Georgia yesterday to be employed on the Georgia & Florida railroad at §1.50 & day. The Eastern Texas railroad has sent for 200 laborers to be em- ployed at $1.25 a day. Forr Swrrh, Ark., Oct. 2.—A ter- rible affray occurred late last night near the Big Lent, between a man named W. P. A. Johnson apd a negro named Crawford Morris. Both weré intoxicated, and quatreled and drew revolvers. Johnson was shot twice through the stomach and once through the lungs; Morris was shot once through the stomach. Both are fnow dying. To further the worklog of the council in the future, the busi- ness committee recommended the ap- pointment of a standiog committee by each branch of the Presbyterian church represented fn the alliance, with which the clerks of the council may be in correspondence upon any topic which the business of the council may require. The delegates were in- structed to bring this letter to the attention of the church. The council acknowledged with thanks the lotter received from the Perth conference. _Friendly greetinga were also directed to te sent to the free church of Breslau.
