NOTES OF INTEREST. A most extraordinary habeas corpus case came’ before Judgo Porter, in the Criminal Court, yes- terday—People ex. rel. Datus Ensign, v. Sheriff Bradley. The assertions freely made on both gides are so contradictory, and display the exist- enco of such deepMaid villainy on the part of one or the other, that it is impossible (and un- safe) to give the reader an idea of ihe charges in the shape they were given. It is quite evi- dent ‘that there has been & great deal of scheming, & great deal of vin- dictiveness, and a great of litigation, the relation of euy part of which might involve oneina lawsuit. The facts as they are stated we are unable to present, but the facts as they appeared on proof in the petition for habeas corpus indicate that Datus Ensign was sent to “the County Juil, by Justice Vant Woud, on & charge of ‘ conspiracy to convict his n- sign's) wife and & Mr. Chase, of committing adultery ; that the prisoner was brought up, and twice remanded, for ten days each time, by the Justice ; that the evidonce against_the prisoner was to the effect that he had laid an infor- mation before the Grand Jury affirming fhat his wife had run away with said Chase, and that ho had followed them to Chicago, where he discov- ered that they hed commitfed adultery; that Mrs. Ensignhad formerly been housskeepor to r. Chese; and there was also something said about a string being tied to-a bedstead occr yied by Mr, Chase and Mrs. Ensign, ot the end of which’ Mr. Ensign and a le; entleman were waiting for & signel. The petitioner prayed for the discharge of tho _ pris- legal ~ ground that Justice The Stock on Hand, and What They Will Do with It, From Our Own Correspondent. The cold weather of yesterday was considered favorable for those horses which have passed the crisis of the discase. The breath of winter, it i8 bolieved, has removed all epizootic vapors, and will effectuslly stay the further progress of tho epidemic, and if horse nurses prevent their patients from long exposure withont exercise, the ““cold snap ” will speedily remove all tracos of the disease with which they have suffered. The reports of the epizootic having had a drop- sical successor in New York, has created much elarm in Chicego, snd, indeed, it is re- orted that some dropsical ceses ve occurred in Chicago. . This wonld indeed b & winter fraught with misery, if wo were compelled to stable our horses, and carry on our varions pursuits as wo have done during tho past month. Batreports from New York in- dicate that the dropsy is not an epidsmic, but is 8 diseaso which resnits from exposure andrough treatment. _Sinco, therefore, it is not an epi- demic, but is the result of usage whilo the oni- mal is convalescent, we may hope that there is enongh of judgment and humsnity smong our horscmen, ~ whoreby the dropsy shall be averted. = Dr. Reuch reporta that buf very fow _cases of character have occurred in the city. The snow-storm of yesterday mede the various omnibus and street-car lines in operation very popular. West Bide stages wero of all lines tho most patronised, and the general squeezing in each vehicle conse- quent upoa this popularity, Was mot only nn- pleesant but embarassing, end it was only mutusl _sufferanco’ which . made the ride sn _improvement on _walking. Horse mortelity is on the decresse. Yesterday but eleven deaths wero reported. Livery stables aro all hiring out, carriages, slthough some are yet nursing their choicer stock. From ell Bowices the reports are that the days of tho epizootic in this city are numbered, and that all traces of it will soon be gone. GENERAT, NEW SITEMS.
