The work was accomplished part- ly with the aid of the federal govern- ment, who sets aside certain amounts to be used in construction of highways throughout the country, provided of course that the state is willing to contribute its share. The excellent piece of highway on the for- merly dangerous Alcova hill is an example of federal aid wark of this kind. The Alcova road is in excellent thape for 40 miles southwest of Cas- per. WU TOR FLUSHE A motorized street flusher of the most approved type has recently been purchased by the Board of Pub- le Works of Kansas,City, Mo. The equipment is mounted on a Pierce- Arrow Dual Heavy Duty truck and the tank contains 1,500 gallons of water. The flusher is capable of cleaning from 25,000 to 30,00 square yards per hour. Before this modern type of street flusher was placed in use, horse drawn apparatus was used in clean- ing Kansas City streets. The Pierce- Arrow flusher cleans 140 blocks in the downtown sections of the city during eight working hours The purchase of a Pierce-Arrow truck by ‘the Board of Public Works ot Kansas City was influenced to a large extent by the hilly streets. The power, ruggedness and hill- climbing ability of the Pierce-Arrow truck mude it especially sultable for Kansas City’s purposes. Pierce Arrow flushers have been in use for years in other cities. Men and equipment released from their work in the downtown seoc- tions of the city by the purchase of this flusher will be used to clean other sections of the city that have hitherto been cleaned at less fre quent interavis, According to Dr. C. As far as real importance to com- merce and transportation is con- cerned, the Alcova or Rawlins road Is probably the most important of ali our highways. To reach any city along the Union Pacific railway in Wyom by rail requires a long tedious ney by way of Cheyenne, covering in all about three times the distance required by highway. It has been found to be absolute- ly imperative that this road be prop- erly built and continuosiy maintain- ed. It was formerly a county thor- oughfare and until it was taken over my the state a year ago, did not ob- tain its new lease on life. For motorists pianning a trip to Lander, the new Alcova road—Sweet- water route presents something new in scenery ane a bit shorter dis- tance to traverse. The traveler to take advantage of this newly im- proved route leaves Casper on the Alcova road until Muddy Gap is reached and then turns almost straight west, perhaps a trifle north- west and enters Lander from the southeast. The road follows the Sweetwater river for a considerable distance and is becoming more popu- ar each week with Casper to Lander tourt.
