Register complaints | before & o'clock, not — sors temecsaneretieaei | National Tax .Revision Secretaary Mellon is bravely going before the people with tis battle for tax reyision and makes an extended statement of the lines on whi i he is making his fight in which he say: “There is to he no ‘Mellon Plan’ before the next congress. Writing men are largely responsible for the fact that there was a ‘Mellon Plan’ a year ago. “It (the ‘Mellon Plan’) might better have been called the sury Plan’) because: since a one Democratic 4 dent and two democratic secretaries of the treasury have to congress exactly the same recommendations for tax reform that I s sted “Experience shows conclusively that if taxes are too high the source of reyenue diminishes. No man will continue to sow where he cannot reap. This condition. cannot be .eseaped—more scientific taxes * incomes or more taxes on the lower incomes, n with small income is more interested than are the wealthy themsclves in seeing that the tax upon high in- comes and large states is economically sound. “ with tax-exempt securities being issued at the . Tate of more than $1,000,000,000 a year, and with other means ,of escaping, the wealthy need no guardian.” Whether your tax bill is large or small, tax, reform should «| result in keeping more money in your pocket. s Dispensing With Pomp : It has been a common statement that in public affairs two employes are usually hired, where one would be required to do the work in private affairs, President Coolidge has shown a determination to change this method of doing public busi- ness if he possibly can. He has decided to dispense with the services of the White House Soejal Secretary and turn this work over to-some man in the state department service. This means that a man in the state department will have to-assume | the additional responstbility of directing the conduct of al} formal social functions ‘at the White House instead of being merely an adviser in regard to them in the past. It has been suggested that the man on whom, this additional duty will fall is likely to resign. It is a safe bet, however, that he will not resign. If the people want economy in public affairs they must back public officials who have the courage to cut red tape and public pomp even though it causes someonesto lose a job on the publie payroll he People’s Entertainment This season the Chautauqua opens on July 15 and closes with the 2Ist, and the wholesome entertainment is furnished by the Ellison White company. This organization has sup- plied Casper for quite a number of years and there is yet to be the slightest objection found with their programs or with the individual performers. This season the program is nicely balanced with music, humorous and serious leetures, drama novelties and concert ; numbers and is possibly the best selection of talent yet to ap- pear in this city since the establishment of the efreuit. Our people are no strangers to the Chautauqua as a clean and inspiring source of entertainment and instruction, and the this . patronage accorded it year in all probability will be a repetition of former years—record breaking. | The Chautauqua caters largely to the better element of | the population, that is why it is in and moral in everything * it presents, At the same time it dées not omit the cheerful- id brightness. Its influence is wholly toward upbuild- nd betterment*of citizenship, There is one notable thing about the Chautanqua—it never leaves a bad taste in your \ Short and Merry Life by bout the vanity of all human things, noblest basmuch as even the later that works are not eterna) but must as though they had never been we the world, so far as we can see, was should remember made to enjoy rather than to dast The thought is Samuel Butler's, You will find it-elabor- | ated on in his. note books, which ayailable in book form, | Refleet and it is apparent that come-and-go pervades every- ‘ thing of which we have knowledge, and though great things “go more slowly, they are built up of small ones. Butler asks: “Are we to haye our enjoyment of Handel and Shakespeare (for instance) weakened because a day will come when there will be no more of either Handel or Shakespeare nor yet of cars to hear them?” and he answers with another | question: “Is it not enough that they should stir such count- Jess multitudes so profoundly and kindle such intense and af- fectionate admiration for so many ages as they have done and | probably will continue to do?” | ie Jife of a great thing may be so long as practically | to come to immortality even now, but that is not the point.” he ways. “The point is that if things began to shape or short life and a merry o tuything was aimed at at all when be shaped, it seems to have been a with an extension of time in cor tain favored cases, rather than a permanency of eyen the | sx noblest.” . When one comes to think of it, death and birth are so losely corelated that one could not destroy either without destroying the other at the same time. Tt is extinction that makes creation possible, If, however, any work is to have long life it is not enough that it should be good of its kind. Many ephemeral things are perfect in their way. It must be of a « durable kind as well, Women and Work > | That one in five of the working women in the United States is less than twenty years of age and that even most of i, them are between the ages of twenty and twenty-four is set forth in a statement from the department of labor, Two-fifth: are set down ns between twenty-five and forty-four years of age. As to workflig men nearly one-half are between the ages ‘© of twenty-five and forty-four while the number above forty: four is about one in six, Of two million married women at work one half are native whites and one-third are negro. In South Cavolina more than onethind of the women are at work hile in West Virginin the proportion is about one in nine, aera 2» hes ps , Che Casper Daily Cethune + NOTICE OF SALE OF REAL ESTATE co Harding Bros. teseeePart SEX NW, section 3, township 88, range 79 -.-.-e-ccenenee 16.56 ; eaters J (Continued From Page’ Eleven) Casper Realty, . ; ie i x Thorndale, lot 11, block 2 wepienaesiseshengoeaeecimnmne an + G0 We J.
