Sunduy of tne monument raised by the Knights yf Columbus in honor of the Rev. ather Peter John DeSmet, intrepid t missionary. Mr, and Mrs. M. Voley e former a member of Knights of ‘Columbus, and Mr. y 4 Mrs. Wilson Kimbalt, the former ® pioneer resident and Interested in the Natrona County Historical so. were present from Casper. Mass was sald at 9:30 o'clock at monument by Bishop Patrick vvern of Cheyenne. Bishop Mc- _yavern_was assisted in the dedica- 1 ceremonies by the Rev. Fathers john Mullins and Edward Cassidy of r, A splendid sermon was given by Father Kennedy, S. J., of Orleans, location of the monument «r Daniel, in Sublette county, is the very spot where, 85 years Father DeSmet offered up the t mass ever celebrated within the limits of the present state of Wyom- The congregation was made » of @ motley gathering of trap- hunters, Flathead and Snake Indlaas, It is safe to say that his : WI be harded down to pos- ef the bright orna- ments in the t nary annals of Catholic church tn Amorita. Pierre Jean De Smet was born a: Termonie, Belstim, Januury O11, but, at the age of twen! 1 with for the spread of the 1, emigrated to the United ates and entered the Society of Jesus, in which his designated field of labor became the country about 8h Ont St. ‘Louis: His first missionary journey was to the Pottawatomies, at Council Bluffs, in 1832. It so happened that during that decade four different delegations of Indians, from’ the far west, presented them- selyes before the bishop of St. Louis, requesting him to send them ,“‘black- | robes” to {nstruct them concerning the Great Spirit. Having no men at his disposal, the good bishop sent them to the superior of the Jesuits, who, for lack of means, could not see his way to grant their petition. It was at this juncture that Father De Smet not only offered himself for “this arduous mission, but likewise agteed to raise in his native country the means necessary to finance the work, His first visit to the Rocky moun- tain region was in 1840, when he traversed the sections inhabited by the Flatheads, phe Pen d’. It was on this trip that, at the Green River rendezvous, he cclebrated the mass to which reference hag beon made. In 184i, after a journey to Europe in which he had secured both missionaries and funds to support them, we find him in the Oregon country estab- lishing Ignatius’ however, was later to Missoula, Montana. As the terrible} Blackfoot were a constant menace to the Christian Indians, Father De-|{ Smet determined to go to them per- sonally in order to direct their steps in the way of peace. In this he was eminently successful, and Father Point was left to establish a mission that would perpetuate the results of his peace parley. By actual calpulation this re- nowned man traveled 180,000 miles on his various journeys. When it ts considered that much of this was made in “prairie s¢hooners” and on foot in actual missionary labors, it must be set down as a most remark: able accomplishment. Recognizing his intimate know! edge of the far west and his extra- ordinary influence among the In: dians, the United States goveryment made use of his services both as an |City of Casper, County of Natrona, and State of Wyoniing, a ss due and unpaid on the eame will take place between the } army chaplain and in the conduct of pace negotiations. The most im- Portant of these missions was in 1868, when he went alone into the hostile camp of the Sioux, under Sitting Bull, and induced the In- dians to sign a treaty. General Stanley says of this feat: “Father DeSmet, alone of the entire white race, could penetrate to those cruel savages and return safe and sound.” This unselfish man passed to his reward at St. Louis, May 23, 1873. His ability as a writer {s attested by a number of works dealing with his labors among the Red Men, and their popularity may be gauged by the fact that they have been trans- lated into several European lan- guages. ANT-FOREIGN AGITATION IN CANTON GROWS CANTON, July 9—(By The Asso- clated Pre&s)—Continued anti-foreign agitation started an exodus of Can- ton Business houses to the Brit- ish settlement of Hong Kong, 95 miles distant. The move was started when predictions were made that hos- tilitles would last for six months. The controlling Chinese govern- ment yesterday issued orders for- bidding anyone to accept foreign cur- rency and assumed control of the postoffice for censorship purposes, Thousands of Chinese have aban- doned their residences at Hong Kong and are arriving here daily. As a precautionary measure for- eign gunboats are proceeding to waterway approaches of Canton for the purpose of convoying ships car- rying foreigners. Strikers continue to receive food stuffs and money from abroad. How- ever, many clerks, boys and other | workers are anxious to be back at their old employments but are pre- vented from returning by Chinese strike leaders, A double guard h: been placed at the residence of the British con- sul general here because of the re- ports that attempts would be made to kill him.
