Now Willys-Knight brings this to a higher pitch by the announcement that its braking equipment on its newest product consists of six-whee) brakes, On the front and rear axles are mounted mechanically operated brakes of unique but simple design and construction, four on the rear wheels and two on the front axle, giving the driver maximum braking safety, at the same time requiring minimum attention. The front wheel brakes differ radi. cally from any other design in use in this country. The braking force is tranemitted trom the pedal by o rod jeading to a lever supported by & bracket attached to the front azle.| Mounted on this lever fs a floating | equalizer. This lever is mounted on a float ing equalizer In the bracket. Pull rods extend from the equalizer to yoke carrying rollers located {n the bracket proper. The yokes are fitted with ball Joints to permit universal action necessary to perfect steering and braking. The front brakes are of {nternal design with two cast aluminum shoes anchored at the top. The Chandler chassis, with its two famous units, the Pikes Peak motor and traffic transmission, is attract- ing a great deal‘of attention every- where since its recent extraordinary performance in breaking the world’s 1,090-mile record by covering the dis- tance in 689 minutes, an average of Phone 370 86.9 miles an hour. It was a stock car, except for a higher gear ratio, that reeled off a mile every 41 sec- onds for evelen hours and a half, and visitors at the shows are eager to study the construction of a car ca- pable of enduring so severe a test. The Pikes Peak motor has been de veloped and refined. The present show season sees the introduction of new type pistons, a larger of] pump, supplying of! at higher pressure to all bearing surfaces, piston pins floating in phosphorus bronze bush- ings, and other changés for greater ease of maintenance and operation. The traffic transmission, intro- duced in September, 1923, has under- gone severe tests in the hands of thousands of Chandler owners. It was a success from the beginning, and is now firmly established as one of the greatest advances in motor car design. Visitors at the Chandler booth are always Interested ta learn how it is possible that a gearset that is handled in exactly the same man- ner as other transmission can be shifted infallibly, up or down, at any normal driving speed.
