CHICAGO, Feb. 7.—Women of wealth and fashion from the “Gold Coast,” bold-eyed women of the un- derworld, shifty-eyed men with po reputations and well groomed inees@ men rubbed elbows in minal court as the tedious task of ting a jury to try W. Then reports of a federal investigation of the sensational rise combined with reports that the foreign demand was over estimated started the-slump. Friday, the real shake out took place. The crash sent May wheat down a total of nine cents from $1.94 to opening price. Droves of small investors were wiped out. Unable to meet the demand for more mar- gins, they were forced to let go of their holdings. Others tried to re- cover and “sold short,” praying for the market to continue its down- ward course. Today these hopefuls were * given another shock. From Friday's close of $1.86% the market today opened at $1.8814. It ran up to a top of $1.91% and closed at $1.91.
