NEW AUP SHOWS IMPROVEMENTS | OF MANY TYPES Mechanical Features ~~ Show Latest Designs Of Service. Details of construction of the new Hupmobile Hight reveal even more advanced refinement in de- sign than were incorporated in first statemeiits of the car. They dis- close more. clearly that the appli- cation of numerous engineering principles was contributed to {t in ways not heretofore brought out in multi-cylinder automobile. Among the car's unusual mechan- feal features are the crankshaft, pistons, combustion chambers, valve mechanism, cooling system, starter and generator. The crankshaft, drop forged from carbon steel, is tested for static and dynamic balance. Shart length be- tween bearings gives it extreme rigidity and freedom from perlod- ic vibration. It weight 994% pounds —probably the heaviest ever -manu- factured for an engine of compar. able size. Engineers say that its weight and fr account fer much of the super-smoothness of the engine. Its thick, heavy cheeks @and its delicate balancing forestall possibility of whip or dis- tortion. The smoothness of such a shaft might well be expected to mean to engine operation is accentuated by especially designed’ ght fron pis- s with extremely light and rong connecting rods of drop- forged duralum. Combined with the short, balanced crankshaft—heavy And stiff—light connecting rods and light pistons in efght-in-line’ con- struction mean the complete elim- “ination. of vibration. Hupp engineers believe it better engineering to use an extremely heavy crankshaft, with bear!ngs of large diameter and length, than a lighter shaft of cheaper design and smaller diameter with more bear- ings. Though the Hupmobile de- sign 1s more costly, the company’s engineers ‘point to the engine's per- formance as convincing proof of its greater desirability. Small, ght crankshatts @ more subject to twisting and torsional strains, thgy point out, regardless of the number of bearings used. FUELIZER IN PACKARD HAS ADVANTAGES This {s the time of the year when the average motor car owner appre- clates fully the talk of. automobile engineers about viscosity of lubri- ting oils and low grade of gaso- line. Frequent and long intervals of choking while starting motors and exasperation which comes from balky motors in excessively cold Weather come from low grade gas- cline. One of the results is that unburned gasoline gets down past the pistons and dilutes the lubri- ‘cating oll and from this comes re- pair bills. , In both the Packard Six and the Packard Blght cars both of these conditions are cared for with the Packard “Fuelizer,” a de vice which preheats the gasoline, making it explode more read!ly dur- ing starting and while the motor fs warming up. fornii PUBLIC AND DEALERS PLEASED WITH NEW PAIGE-JEWETT CARS Countless telegrams poured into the Paige-Detrolt Motor Car com- pany’s offices Detroit following the opening showing of the nev Paige and Jewett sixes by dealers throughout the country, January 4th.
