C., Nov. 1— Anticipating a record-breaking south- ward flow of motor tourists this'sta- son, the Touring and Transportation board of the American Automobile association is supplementing its new Florida route book ‘with en outline of the main touring routes\so that the man ‘from Seattle, Chicago -or Boston will have a general. picture of the high points of a southern trip, according to an announcement made here today at the association's headquarters. -« ‘The ‘announcement’ explains. that while: motor tourists will doubtless consult affiliated A. A: A. motor clubs for details of their proposed trips to the Southland a general pic- ture of the main routes should be of particular value to; the man who is as yet undecided. The A. A. A. estimates that 160,000 motor will tour to» Florida and intefmediate points during the winter touring season, but believes that there are many more thousands still undecided because they are unfamiliar with the generaj routes. Eastern motorists, from New Eng: land, New-York, Pennsylvaniz, Ohio and the mid-Atlantic states, should take the route south from Washing- ton, the touring bureau recom- ends. This leads down through Vir- ginia, the “Carolinas, Georgia to ».orida. For the most part this is the Atlantic highway, though it combines, in part, with the Bank- head and Dixie highways, and the Old Spanish rail, if it is followed to Miami. Details now available’ at all the A. A. A. clubs throughout the coun- try reveal the fact that road con- ditions are better than ever before in the Southland, detours being rela- tively few. From Augusta to Jack- sonville over the Atlantic or Dixie Highways, the routes through this section are mostly sand-clay, and as they are somewhat affected ‘by weather conditions tourists are ad- vised to provide for stop-overs when conditions are not favorable. This, the touring board says, forestalls the possibility of marring the tour with! road ‘ind car troubles. -Motorists.. , Florida-bound from Seattle and the Northwest take the Yellowstone Trail or the National Parks highway to Chicago where they make connections with the Jackson or Dixie highways for Cin- 1 By te following the Old Spanish Trail, Texas, New Mexico and Ari- zona tourists can reach Florida over an interesting course that closely follows the Gulf of Mexico. There are connections for Californians over the Pacific highway. The Na~- tional Old Trails road furnishes the best route for Kansas City and St. Louis motoris who prefer to go to Washington, D. C., first and then turn south over the well-marked and well-traveled portions of she Atlantic or Dixie highways. From observations made st Gettys- burg considerable of the southbound travel from the West has been over the Lincoln _highw tourists pre- ferring to take the routes that are traveled most, doing their exploring | - when Florida. they reach Georgia and Predictions by weather experts! and the coast guard to the effect that the coming winter will be the most severe in years may call for changes in routes for those south- bound travelers from the West. It depends*very largely upon the time of starting. Generally speaking, the A. A. A. touring board points out, the eastern tourist can get out of the snow and freezing belt quicker than the man who must travel east as well as south, and for this regson many of the far-western tourists will doubtless combine the Pacific highway and~Old Spanish Trails routes’ to avold cold weather. The A. A. A. camping manual lists 33 recognized public camps in Florida and 36 in Georgia, which is said to explain why so many south- bound motor tourists are taking camping equipment with them. On such long tours camping is not recommended by the touring bureau as a regular diet, but it is often a convenience and an agreeable varia- tion in the trip when the weather and conditions permit. It is pointed out, for instance, that having the equipment to camp out often makes it possible to take advantage of bet- ter roads where hotels. are not located at convenient points. Despite the fact that the general directions of southbound travel ares simpler this year than ever before, he A. A. A. advises consultation with motor club. secretaries before undertaking any trip, since the re- quirements of each motorist call for important variations in the details of the routing. Many Families Now Find Use For Two Cars The great increase in automobile registration is partly attributed by the National Automobile Chamber of Commerce to the number of fami- lies owning two cars, says R. N. Van Sant, local dealer in Star and Durant cars. As = matter of fact, the ownership of two cars is eco- nomical for those in average circum. stances. The average owner desires a car of comfortable proportions for the use of his family and for long The tendency in this respect is leaning towards closed cars. But for the short trips about town in traffic, and when one or two pas- sengers are carried, the owner real izes that a small car costs less to Operate than a large car. The sreat- ly increasing number of business men and salesmen who use ¢heir automobiles day in and day out for business purposes. prefer to own a large car for family use and 2 less exvensive car for daily transporta- tion. Star automobiles have been espe- clally popular with those who own two cars because they offer low cost transportation, yet are of a quality satisfactory to owners of much higher priced cars.
