PAGE EIGHT BRONZE STATUE OF BUFFALO BILL BEING SHIPPED T0 CODY Buffalo Bill is saying farewell to the east! For one week ‘the handsome bronze equestrian statue of Col. Wil- liam F, Cody, work’ of Mrs. Harry * Payne Whitney, is on exhibition on the Mall in Central park, New York City, prior to its departure for the west, and its permanent location at Cody, Wyo. The lifelike bronze is placed in an excellent position be- tween the statues of Shakespeare and Columbus, New York and the east is thus given an opportunity to view the unusual art piece through the courtesy of Francis D. Gallatin, commissioner of parks of the dity of New York. “This remarkable statue will mean a good deal not only to the far west, where people know Colonel Cody so well and where people will now flock to see him in bronze, but it will mean something to this entire coun try,” said Judge Elbert Gary, presi dent of the United States ‘Steel cor. poration, at the special Sunset cere: mony, which opened the exhibition week, which is being conducted by the Buffalo Bill American associa- tion, and the American Scenjc, and Historic Preservation society. “There is beyond this work of art another and a deeper meaning, continued Judge Gary. “This great statue actually represents what America stands for. Note that for- ward movement, that inspired move- ment, that movement of leadership. The ‘horse and rider are plunging ahead, aggressive, leaders. It is typical of this country which leads all other nations in the forward stride.” Other speakers at the ceremony were: Dr. George F. Kunz, presi TRAMP KILLED AT BILLINGS BILLINGS, Mont., June 18,—An unidentified man about .65 ars old apparently a tramp was struck and almost instantly killed by west- bound Burlington passenger. train No. 43, just east of Billings about 6:15 o'clock this morning. PAUL, nominees for June 18.—Republican United States senator and governor and the Farmer-Labor gubernatorial selection had not been definitely determined today when tabulation of returns from Mon- day's primary election was resumed here. Magnus Johnson, Minnesota's junior senator, was renominated on the Farmer-Labor ticket in a walk- way, registering a vote that may in on a ten to one ratio over the nearest of his two opponents. Oscar Hallam of St. Paul, former associate justice of the te su preme court had a lead of 8,000 votes over Congressman Thomas D. Schall in the Republican senatorial contest, with Ole Sageng of Dalton running third For governor, Theodore Christian. gon of Dawson had a lead of 2,000 votes over Curtis M. Johnson of Rush City, on the Republican ticket with the other four candidates pressing them closely dent of the American Scenic’ and Historic Preservation society; F. D. Gallatin, park commissioner, and Robert D. Dripps, secretary of the Buffalo Bill American association, and former director of public safety of Philadelphia, Groups of Camp Fire girls in cere- monial costume formed a court of honor, and grouped about Mrs. Harry Payne Whitney, the sculptor, at the fiag-draped base of the statue, while the two thousand spectators cheered the talented sculptor, and batterfes of motion picture men and photographers took pictures of the group. Early next week the three ton statue of Buffalo Bill, which was recently honored by the French gov: ernment with the “Award of Hono: and which is the largest statue ever made by a woman, will start its journey westward. It will be un- velled by the Buffalo Bill American avsociation, July 4, at ly 4, at Cody. WOUNDED B BY AGED HUBBY DENVER, June 18,—Mrs. Minnie L. Graves, 60 years old, who was shot and severely injured last night by her husband, Abner Graves, 90 years old, mining engineer and former plainsman, was still alive today although physicians declared her condition was critical. Her hus- band, whom she accuses of firing the shots is confined in the general hospital. He {s so badly crippled that he is unable to walk very ,well even with the aid of crutches.” He is under police guard and will be held until the outcome of his wife's injuries can be determined. The shooting, according to room: ers in the same house as the Graves family, climaxed a violent quarrel between the woman and her aged husband, over the signing of a bill of sale for their home. Graves was said to have been sitting in a chair at the time of the shooting while his wife stood but a few feet away. “T had to do it, one of us had 50.’ Graves told police detecti immediately following the shooting. He. explained this by declaring that his wife had tried to kill him by putting polson into his coffee Monday evening. An examination by physicians at the general hos- pital later disproved this statement, according to a police report. The shooting occurred shortly be- fore 10 o'clock last night. Mr, and Mrs. Graves have been married 1 UNKNOWN MAN TRACK VICTIM DENVER, June 18.—Pollios ‘and coroners office attaches today are secking to establish the identity of an aged man who yesterday was struck and killed while walking along the right of way of the Moffat road near Utah Junction. The man, apparently-abcut 65 years of age was carrying a handkerchief with the initials “W. M. N." as the only means of identification, The man was struck and knocked to the side of the railroad’s right of way by the engine and suffered a fractured skull. He died in th police ambulance while being re- moved to the general hospital. —_—_—_———————— Call tho Tribune for highway tn, formation i oe For results try a Tribune rified Ad Clas === Cir.cqnot Cio Ginger Ale There’s just-right-ness in every bottle of Clicquot Club.
