Pa SUNDAY, JUNE 1, 1924. EARTH WAVE HF REPEATED “GND YEARS Rest Promised After Disturbance Now on Is Concluded. ‘By ©. T. HALLINAN GLASGOW, May 31:—(United Press.)—That a large and disturbing wave is moving around within our earth is the view advanced by Ludovie McClellan Mann in a paper read here before the Royal Philoso- phical soclety. This wave, which rears up con- tinents and sinks oceans Is, fortu- nately, not capricious or frisky. It 4s satisfied to move around the earth once in 8,800 years, from’ east to West, obliquely to the plane of the earth’s ecliptic. But it upsets the earth's axis and wobbles the poles and plays sad havoc, according to Mann, with old stronomical calculations. ‘That's the part about it that pleases Mann. He has been study- ing the astronomical errors of Ptolemy & Co. for twenty years. He feels that now he has them figured- out. Fortunately, this disturbing mo- tion is slowing down. Broadly speaking, it is nearly extinct. In about 400,000 years the flighty earth will be as solid as Gibralta And even the climate will show improvement in the direction of sobriety and regularity and fore- astibility. “This internal motion, by causing the earth's crust to pulsate, would ‘account for those raised continents in non-earthquake regions, for those Sunken continents, those submerged forests, and for the rise and fall of oral reefs and islands.” * Once the velocity, direction and ‘Amplitude of this profound and gigantic disturbance are appreciated, they throw Mght upon many of those periods in the experience of the race which have been hitherto shrouded in mystery, Mann submitted chart showing « that the American continent is four thousand years older than Europe. Many geologists have suggested hat it was older than Europe, but Mann thinks that the theory of the internal wave settles the question of how much older. The long axis of the American continent as well as the axis of the Atlantic depres- sion lie, to a hair’s breadth, athwart the direction of this internal wave ‘and, indeed, can only be explained ‘by it. Mann said that the theory, when applied to the mysterious ancient @nonuments at Stonehenge, England, get surprising confirmation. “Stonehenge is an ancient calen- @ar,” he said, “it. registers astron- wmical events occurring in’a period of twelve definte Saroi, the Saros ‘being that period of time easily cal- culable in which the Sun, Moon and ‘Nodes recur in the same relative ‘posi ” : Bi] | master, and Robert I.
