As the gears are mounted in the axle housing, they are lubricated by means of the lubricant which is carried in the housing.- The filler opening is usually so placed to provide the correct level of the lubricant automatically when re- vienishing the supply. The bevel fing gear in passing through the lubricant, distributes it to the vart- ous bearings and gear teeth. Owing to the difficulty in gaining access to the axle, the lubricant can be introduced by means of a squirt gun. For , iubricant, semi-fluid off is generally recommended. This should be about the consistency of 690-W steam engine oll. At least every 5,000 miles the old lubricant should be removed and the housing thor- oughly flushed to remove all grit and the supply should be replenished with fresh’ ofl. ¥ The dictionary meaning of the word differential seems to denote mechanical parts which, though driven by a common member, have different velocities or speeds of rota- tion.
